Sergio Sanchez Selva

Sergio, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I’m someone who unexpectedly combined a love for Architecture and Art with a career in the world of Film, TV, and Commercials. My journey began with studying Architecture, where I learned to pay attention to details and understand spatial design – skills that now play a big role in my current work.

After studying Architecture, I found myself drawn to the excitement of the Film industry. Now, I’m a Set Designer in the lively city of New York, proudly part of Local 829. Instead of designing buildings, I design sets for movies, TV shows, and commercials. It’s like painting on camera, and I get to blend my architectural background with my passion for storytelling through visual media. This unexpected path brings together my past and present, where my architectural skills help create the backdrop for captivating on-screen stories.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The transition from Architecture to Film/TV hasn’t been entirely smooth. I had to grasp the nuances of the industry’s language, like camera angles and lighting, which differed from my architectural background. Additionally, adapting to the US work style in the Film sector brought its own set of challenges. The fast-paced, collaborative nature of this field was a shift from the individualistic approach of Architecture. Despite these hurdles, these experiences have expanded my skill set and provided insights into the diverse aspects of creative work environments.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
In the realm of Film and TV, I work as a Set Designer. My focus spans from translating conceptual ideas to handling the technical intricacies, embracing the collaborative process.

I’m genuinely honored to have been part of crafting sets for the “And Just Like That” reboot of Sex and The City. This experience underlines my efforts to integrate my architectural skills with the entertainment field. What sets me apart is my dedication to both the creative and technical aspects of design, enabling me to contribute comprehensively to projects. I take pride in my role and continually seek ways to enhance the art of storytelling through my work.

Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
The biggest lesson I’ve learned is that a great work environment, where everyone’s ideas are respected and valued, can make a world of difference. It’s amazing how a sense of teamwork and mutual respect can lead to innovative solutions and a shared sense of achievement. This journey has shown me that collaboration and open communication are key ingredients for success.
