Life & Work with Sarah McVickar of Hermosa Beach, CA

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah McVickar

Hi Sarah, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I loved making and selling jewelry when I was younger-in middle school. My love for creating reignited a few years ago, when I found myself bored in my first office job. I love art and I dance, so making jewelry was a fun creative outlet during that time.

I also have been strengthening my gifts of prayer and intuition over the past few years, so I was making my friends pieces of jewelry with specifics designs and notes of encouragement hand-tailored to them. It lifted their spirits so much that I wanted to spread that joy by developing a business where I could have a positive impact on more people, especially my community in the South Bay.

I had a dream 10 years ago where I woke up with the name “Iana.” I thought it was beautiful and tucked it into my back pocket. It means “God is gracious.” When I was deciding for a business name, Iana came to mind again. God has been so gracious in my life and I feel that He is gracious to speak to us daily. I hope that joy and encouragement can be felt in my jewelry.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Having enough time to devote to the craft while working full-time has been the biggest obstacle, and finances to purchase the material to make the art. A big motivation in my previous office jobs was to make money to purchase beads, so that I can create meaningful pieces.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Most of my work was dance and entertainment related, pre-pandemic. I lost all of my work during the pandemic, so post-pandemic I had decided to go the more traditional clerical routes just to stay afloat financially.

It is a financial challenge to have stable income as an artist, especially in Los Angeles with current inflation. But I am working my way to live fully off of my art! Jewelry and dance.

Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
A goal of mine is to make my older self proud. I want to know that I’ve fulfilled my calling on this earth. Even if I affect one person with encouragement, I know my time has been well spent.

Not everyone loves making jewelry-so I wanted to listen to my talents and desires. I’m so happy to be working as an artist now, as I feel it is how I’m supposed to touch people’s lives in an uplifting way.

My advice is to listen to your individual passions-whatever they are! They are there for a reason and you will make the world a better place by listening to them. We need people who love medicine, we need people who love finance, and we need people who love art! We’re all making this world a wonderful place to live in when we are developing and carrying out our individualized talents.
