Life & Work with Samm Diaz of Burbank

Today we’d like to introduce you to Samm Diaz.

Hi Samm, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
It started off as an idea in early 2020, me and a friend of mine were eating pizza before leaving our college campus due to covid. We were having the typical girl conversation of wanting to start a coffee/flower shop and what it would be like. This idea took over my thoughts gradually after this conversation and after much thought, I shared this idea with my mom where she decided to take action with me in prayer. We prayed this specific prayer that God would open up a lot on a corner, in between Whole Foods and Warner Brothers right before driving into Hollywood. Shortly after, I was going on my daily drive to get out of the house since we were on lockdown, and gain some sanity back. On this drive, I noticed a lot that was on a corner, in between Whole Foods and Warner Brothers, and I was in shock to say the least. This lot soon became very important to me as I would later go there daily to read my Bible and pray over my future flower shop. It is at that lot, that God revealed to me that the name would include “land of the living” based on Psalm 27:13. As I would pray about this concept the land of the living, I prayed over the New Jerusalem–sounds crazy but I personally have never heard about this new Jerusalem, so I quickly asked God to reveal what that was to me. Funny enough, the Bible plan I had been reading that week assigned the reading of Revelation 21:9 which talks about the New Jerusalem. Needless to say, I was in total shock of the way God had been so attentive to my prayers. This is how I got the name Deezy Florals: Land of the Living and I believe that flowers serve as a metaphor for much of the human life and condition as they also convey a message of the beauty of life. After this experience, I knew it was my calling and I had to go for it! It took me 4 years of constant conversation with God to get this business off the ground, and it was worth the wait.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It was lots of detouring, and waiting! I was trying to finish up my bachelors degree in Education when this business came about, and it took so much in me to actually finish what I started because I wanted to so badly put my all in right away to this flower business. My first debut with land of the Living was at a Maker’s Market in a church courtyard and it was to fundraise for a mission trip to Cote d’ivore, and I decided I would fundraise by selling flower bouquets (I look back at those bouquets and thank God they don’t look like that anymore LOL). Once I got back from Africa, I took a gap semester and so many of my friends told me I should work at a flower shop to gain some experience, and my boyfriend now fiancé helped me find the perfect flower shop job in Studio City where I learned so much of what I know now as a florist running a small business, it was so fun and I loved it! After a year of working there, I decided I needed to finish my degree before going all in and starting my own business for real! I began selling small dried bouquets in a coffee shop that I used to work at to further fundraise for my undergrad classes and that’s where I started getting actual orders! I started my instagram, started doing pop-ups at local coffee shops, and got 4 weddings within my first 8 months of business–that alone was huge for me. None of these were struggles looking back, but definitely lots of unknown spaces I was stepping into. The only struggle may have been juggling school while doing most of this!

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I specialize in Weddings and Events, aside from the occasional birthday, anniversary, or just because orders! I am mostly known for my pop-ups and using unconventional specialty flowers that you wouldn’t find in the typical grocery stores. I love using a variety of flowers for my arrangements and bouquets as it enhances the allure of wonder for my special clients! I am most proud of the fact that I could be there and support my friends and family by providing flowers for all the special moments and occasions that life brings. I believe that what sets me a part from others is my unconventional designs and boldness to step into risk with each of my designs! I make sure that all my brides are 100% happy with the flowers that they order!

How do you think about happiness?
What makes me happy is that God trusts me with this calling, and loves me enough to provide my every need abundantly and more than I can ask, think, or imagine. I am able to step into what I am called to do with ease and comfort knowing that I am where I am supposed to be. Moreso, Designing with flowers is such a wonder-filled, messy, and beautiful job, and it makes me happy because there’s not one day where I’m not designing and excited for the flowers I get to meet. I feel like a kid in a candy shop!
