Life & Work with Samantha Behar of Los Angeles

Today we’d like to introduce you to Samantha Behar

Hi Samantha, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Growing up my uncle brought his camera to family gatherings and I always wanted to hold it and take photos too. That turned into bringing my own camera to free dress day at my normally uniformed middle school (fashion photography full circle!) and sometimes photographing stuff in high school. In college I took a brief break but during the pandemic I started photographing my friend Mo who modeled and had a successful Depop shop. I was reunited with photography and hit the ground running. From there I freelanced a bit and then landed where I’m at now, at Hype & Vice as their photographer! I still take on projects outside of work and lately have been getting into wedding and event photography.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Being in a creative field can be difficult at times because you want to pursue your dreams and do what makes you happy but at the same time there are a million other people within just a mile of you doing the same thing and have been doing it longer or have more resources. Lots of imposter syndrome, lots of self doubt. I learned that as long as I’m creating things that make me happy and that I think are beautiful, that’s all that matters and the rest will fall into place.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m a fashion photographer! I love clothes and I love photographing people in them. Outside of Hype & Vice I sometimes do second shooting for weddings which has been a fun learning experience for me. At work I shoot with a digital camera but outside of work I’m known more for my film photography. I just love how precise each photo has to be with poses, the clothes, location to get the perfect shot. If I’m photographing an event I love capturing the moment beautifully and exactly the way it was. There’s always a special feel to it.

Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
I think that both good luck and bad luck have gotten me where I’m at today. There’s definitely a balance and when things feel off-balance I just know it won’t last forever and something good is around the corner. When I was right out of college I had a whole year of what felt like bad luck with finding a job and dealing with the pandemic. I still kept shooting, applying for jobs, reaching out to people and after almost a year and a half I felt like I had the best luck ever getting a job. Hard work and a little bit of luck goes a long way!
