Today we’d like to introduce you to Ryan.
Hi Ryan, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started photography in high school when I was just trying to get an easy A. I ended up loving the class! I checked out the cameras on the weekends and shortly thereafter I bought my own camera.
I purchased a Canon Rebel T2i and brought it with me on all of my travels. Whether I was travelling through Europe or backpacking in Sequoia I always had my camera at the ready. A friend once told me that, “a good photographer never lets his camera get in the way”. I took that advice to heart and was consistently taking and editing my photography.
When I was dating my now wife I showed her my photography and she suggested that I should start my own photography business. I thought it was a little bit of a wild and scary idea, but I placed it on the backburner. Some friends of ours were going to get engaged and they asked me to photograph their special moment. After I captured their special moment and did a quick engagement shoot they notified me that their jeweler wanted some of the photos that I took. I was very flattered and then I decided to start my own photography business!
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I would not say that it has been the smoothest of roads. I have learned a lot about being a business owner and reaching out to potential clients. I am focusing on small businesses (breweries, fitness studios, coffee shops, etc.) and have been enjoying meeting everyone regardless if they are looking for a photographer or not.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am focusing on small businesses because I would love to help them grow and push them forward. I have been speaking with a lot of breweries as they have so many events! From trivia, to running clubs, to exhibitions there are so many events and cultures that pass through them.
My favorite type of photography is landscape photography and would love to follow in Jimmy Chin’s shoes or shoot for National Geographic one day. I have been considering selling my landscape photos, but starting out with business photograph currently.
We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
Success is a difficult thing to define because once you may meet that point of success it may not be enough. I think I have my goals I would like to meet, such as being a photographer fulltime, and once I get there reassess what I would like to focus in and do. There are so many paths to follow in photography and I would love to remain open to any all of them.
