Today we’d like to introduce you to Reagan Marelle Begley.
Hi Reagan Marelle, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
While getting my AA in fashion design before moving into my Advanced Degree specifically for Denim Design, I had to make a fit sample for my patterning final. Being a broke college student, I couldn’t afford to purchase fabric to make the sample, but with my knowledge of fabrics, I knew that 100% cotton denim was made with a 1×1 weave and had a sturdy enough hold I could use it for an accurate fitting fabric. So I cut up old jeans to create a panel of fabric for my pattern sample. The result of the pair of pants ended up being so cool, and people started asking me to make them a pair, from there one thing led to another, and I fell in love with denim and designing with it that made me want to then get my advanced degree in denim.
During my continued studies at FIDM, while getting my Advanced Degree in Denim Design, one of the biggest things that stuck with me through schooling was the environmental impact denim has made on the world. From how the fabric is dyed to the chemicals put on the fabric to the way you finish that garment, package, and deliver it. Not to mention the waste that has gone into sampling and overproducing garments to keep up with demand and fast fashion trends, I decided to find a way to be able to do what I love without adding any more additional harm with bringing awareness to the issues to implement and encourage change.
If you take a step back and look at every little bad impact that makes up the big issue, it is possible to change. It just takes the right people who have the heart and are willing to put in the time and effort because it’s more than just making a quick buck to put in their pocket. Hargan is taking the best of denim and making something of it. And I hope Hargan brings back the value we once had for denim and makes people truly appreciate a garment again.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
No, I like to call my journey a rollercoaster ride. With a lot of high-highs and even lower lows, but one of the best roller coasters you could ever get on.
You have to live in the moment when living through the highs, and you can’t let the lows beat you down. Take them, find the lesson in them, and keep moving forward.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a Social Media & Community manager aside from Hargan. But I would say I specialize in making jeans.. lol. I’ve made a few hundred the last few years and feel I have gotten it down to a science with little Knicks and tricks here and there.
The more people I meet, the more people tell me that sewing is a dying talent and something I should be proud of. So, I would say I am most proud of, and it sets me aside from others, that I know how to sew and can alter just about any garment in my closet!
