Today we’d like to introduce you to Quin Xy.
Quin, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
It seems that one cannot be a designer without some sort of illness? (LOL, just kidding)
This dream about art seems to have started when I was very young. Perhaps it was because my visual system had not yet fully developed, but I always saw strange images floating in my mind’s eye, like jellyfish floating in the void, colorful and surreal. However, as a child, I thought these images were concrete, and I was frightened by the way they changed and combined in front of me. Sometimes, they would form random shapes that resembled monsters with tentacles or beasts flying in the air. I spent countless sleepless nights because of them.
It wasn’t until I realized that no matter how they changed, they were always like solitary islands floating on the sea, never coming closer to me, and I could never get closer to them. From that moment on, I learned to coexist with them and gradually began to observe these ever-changing shapes. The jellyfish in the void also began to change with my thoughts, resembling birds, buildings, clouds, and their colors became more vivid. After that, I began to try to describe them with crayons, but I could only get abstract drawings that were meaningless, and gradually, I lost interest.
This symptom persisted until my first year of junior high school. When something you take for granted disappears, you realize how precious it is, even if it is just a shadow of emptiness in your eyes. Later, I started to investigate the cause and only found an inaccurate name: dissociative reality disorder. With the increase of knowledge and vision, I began to rethink my childhood experiences, perhaps this is why I chose the field of art and one of the reasons that support me to continue in the field of art.
Those images, the jellyfish in the void, the beasts floating in the air, maybe they are not completely imagined? Like Dali’s fantasies, he caught flowing clocks from his hallucinations, or Freud’s dreams, or Jung’s spiritual world. In the process of exploration, I gradually delved into the field of art, trying to use different materials, brushstrokes, and colors to describe childhood fantasies, and gradually came into contact with pioneers in different fields. In the exchanges and practices, I used more and more radical materials and means to shape the monsters in my fantasies, to think about their habits and ecology, and thus to expand a whole new world. I often think about their stories, how to communicate with peers, language, and culture. I can spend hours thinking about it, but I never feel tired.
Finally, during an outdoor sketching session one day, I found that an old friend had returned to me, but in a different way that had integrated into my life. This time it had become a color that was difficult to describe in words, like a faint purple layer on the surface of a red apple, a light creamy yellow near the light, and a black with green tones in deeper shadows. As a rational person, I know that these extra colors don’t actually exist, but I also know that they are there, and I can still draw endless inspiration from observing them. It is no longer a floating island in the sea for me but a utopia that I am striving to approach.
Although I don’t know how long it will take to reach the shore, I believe that there are still many stories on the journey.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I decided to enter the field of art suddenly during high school. At the beginning, I struggled and experienced some pain, such as my family’s lack of understanding and my friends’ confusion. However, I overcame these challenges smoothly.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I really enjoy experimenting with different styles, from traditional illustration to digital art, AI painting, pixel art, even sculpture and welding, etc. I love the different textures of different materials and the different forms of expression of different styles. However, my favorite and also the one I’m working hard on is my own graphic novel and game. I hope to immerse my audience in the world I’ve created and let them physically experience different storylines and “second lives”.
So, before we go, how can our readers or others connect or collaborate with you? How can they support you?
I usually update my Ins and TikTok accounts regularly, and my ID on both platforms is Quinxyart. I reply to all messages as soon as I see them and am always open to direct messages or emails!
