Today we’d like to introduce you to Patty Lopez.
Hi Patty, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My journey in politics began with a desire to improve my community in San Fernando, where I’ve lived for over 35 years. My initial involvement was through volunteer work and local government roles, which allowed me to connect with my neighbors and better understand their needs. This experience led me to run for the California State Assembly in 2014, where I had the honor of serving and passing 14 legislative proposals aimed at improving the quality of life for Californians.
Today, I’m running for the San Fernando City Council with a focus on enhancing public safety, preserving historical sites, supporting local businesses, and ensuring our community has access to essential resources. My next goal is to secure a council seat so I can continue working to make San Fernando a safe, prosperous, and culturally vibrant place for all residents.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Becoming a minority woman in the California State Assembly came with both personal and professional challenges. Personally, I had to overcome stereotypes and navigate a field where there were few people who looked like me or shared my background. Professionally, I faced obstacles in gaining support, as some doubted my ability to make an impact. However, these challenges fueled my commitment to my community and my determination to represent voices that are often overlooked.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I was inspired by a commitment to justice and protecting our natural environment. The law on overturning wrongful convictions came from a deep belief in fairness and ensuring that every individual is treated justly. As for the legislation protecting monarch butterflies, I saw it as essential to preserving our biodiversity and natural heritage for future generations.
My charitable work has always been inspired by a passion for community and social justice. Through my involvement with Mujeres Alfa Internacional, I support initiatives that empower women, promote cultural heritage, and celebrate personal development in our community. Mujeres Alfa Internacional allows us to connect with women from all backgrounds and uplift one another through art, business, and educational opportunities.
In the next stage of my life, I would like to be recognized for my continued dedication to public service, empowering women, and making a lasting impact on my community. I hope to be remembered as someone who fought for justice, equality, and the well-being of others, while helping to create opportunities for future generations.
Alright so before we go can you talk to us a bit about how people can work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
Through Mujeres Alfa Internacional, I work to empower women by providing resources for personal and professional growth, celebrating cultural heritage, and building supportive networks. With TheBFly Girl Empowerment Movement, my goal is to inspire young girls to believe in themselves, embrace their potential, and develop the confidence to lead. I hope these initiatives create lasting opportunities and a strong foundation for women and girls to succeed.
I’ve had the privilege of working with the International Justice Alliance and participating in the International Innovators Awards, which recognize individuals and organizations fighting for social justice and equality on a global scale. This work aligns closely with my own values and goals to create positive change and support underrepresented voices. Both Mujeres Alfa Internacional and the International Justice Alliance inspire me to continue advocating for our community and beyond.
People can work with me by joining my efforts to improve our community, supporting local businesses, and advocating for important causes. Collaborating with me through organizations like Mujeres Alfa Internacional or TheBFly Girl Empowerment Movement is a great way to make a difference. I also welcome support from individuals who share my vision for a stronger, safer, and more inclusive future.
