Today we’d like to introduce you to Owen Galicia.
Hi Owen, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I am a Latinx Filmmaker, Producer, Writer and Creative born and raised in California. I grew up in the San Fernando Valley where I was exposed to a very diverse cultural environment. My Dad (Guatemalan/Spanish) & my Mom (Polish/American), I was an only child growing up. I am now very close to my Latin roots and embrace both of my mixed cultures equally.
This led me to get an offer & opportunity with Film2Future a nonprofit organization that helped discover the next generation of filmmakers & creatives. They gave me the resources and connections I needed to get my foot into the business and industry. It also served as my film education. I sacrificed going to college in order to work full-time & work my way up through different jobs in the film industry. It was honestly one of the smartest things I decided to do, I saved money & didn’t have any future debt.
I worked multiple internships & full-time jobs for: Imagine Entertainment (Ron Howard’s & Brian Grazer’s company), CURATE Talent Management, & most recently Paramount and Nickelodeon. I worked in writers’ rooms, multiple creative development teams, worked alongside talent, & made connections.
I started my own independent production company “Galicia Productions” which has continuously been making short & long form media content. We’ve shot web series, shorts for film festivals, podcasts, and other collaborative media with creators. It’s been an active film group ever since we started three years ago. I just wrapped a psychological thriller indie short film- “The Role” that will be submitted to multiple prestigious film festivals around the US.
I’ve been blessed to have such a great come-up story and this is only the beginning of my journey & career.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
My coming up as a filmmaker and creative was always a hustle and grind. I didn’t have the money or resources to fund my own projects or equipment. I didn’t know anyone in the industry starting out or had any active connections to give me opportunities. Everything I got I worked for and earned, I worked multiple restaurant jobs as side hustles to pay for my first couple of films and equipment. This eventually got better and I was able to later do campaigns, gofundme pages, and generate donations for my future projects.
Today it’s been an adjustment because of the Writers strike going on. My contract with Paramount was cut short because of the strike; working in development, it was a struggle because of all of the production houses being shut down and work was extremely slow. I’ve been able to just rely on my side hustles and open up new business ventures to keep myself creative & active. With time this strike will resolve and it will open up lots of new opportunities & possibilities for my career.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
As a Latinx Creative & Filmmaker, I strive to create media and films that inspire and empower the Latin community. I have written, directed & produced multiple projects that I’ve been proud to showcase at festivals, premieres, and events. My writing is powerful and impactful and my passion is a reflected in my work. I am also a model photographer, I do professional work and have a strong artistic portfolio.
Most of my recent projects and work has been horror/thriller/drama genre. It’s a community I enjoy being a part of and it speaks to my personality and style. Classic cinema has been a big inspiration of my work and early practices have driven me to perfect my own filmmaking style. I am unique because I stand to be, my name and my work is my own.
What matters most to you? Why?
Creative Freedom & Family.
I believe that Family plays a big part of my life, growing up with two different cultures with such large families was a really influential part of my life. I embrace both my Latin/Eastern European roots equally and enjoy spending time with my family.
Creative Freedom is another important aspect of my life. As a filmmaker and creative, I like being able to tell my own story. Have the tools and freedom to be able to create characters, story, or world freely without any restrictions or limitations. Original ideas are the strongest; I believe being unique creates success in the long run.
