Life & Work with Mylin Jordan

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mylin Jordan

Mylin, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I’m Mylin Jordan. I’m from St.Louis, Missouri. A lot of people might know me from playing basketball for most of my life.
I went to three colleges on full-ride basketball scholarships, including at Mount Saint Jacinto in California. When the opportunity to play overseas didn’t work out, I knew always had a special talent when it came to fashion and styling others to suit their tastes; a trait I got from my mother. Don’t get me wrong, my dad has style but I learned alot from my mother when she took me out clothes shopping. I chose to move back out to Los Angeles in 2019, and I’m glad I did. At the time I was in this funk in Kansas City, trying to figure out what to do next. This was right before COVID, I knew I had to follow my gut feeling so I planned it out while talking to my good friends Marc & Rob. I knew I had to move to either Los Angeles or New York to become the creative connoisseur I am today.
I made many acquaintances and professional contacts while working in Los Angeles at retail stores such as Zummies, many of whom where professional basketball players, designers/stylists, and DJs, and some even worked at other trendy stores around LA. From that point everything aligned, I started assisting several stylists, learning the ins & outs of building relationships with the store for wardrobe pulls, doing returns, and using my creativity to enhance the project. Some of the gigs I landed outside my retail experience included magazine and music video shoots, film productions, or runway shows. Since then I’ve been the lead stylist for Kwame Adusei’s two runway shows, both happening in a year, and I had the opportunity to work at the Soho Warehouse in Los Angeles and at the Miami Art Basel. I’ve also been in numerous publications, including VOGUE, Teen Vogue, Vanity Teen, Essence, BoysbyGirls, and many more.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Honestly, I don’t believe it’s been a smooth road. However, I’ve learned to evolve and adapt to various challenging situations. For example, there have been times that I’ve done work and have not been credited. When that happens, you just can get discouraged and think that you’re not good enough. Just keep focus on the bigger picture!

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m a creative connoisseur! I love inspiring confidence in others when they’re around me, especially in fashion and retail, as I mentioned earlier. With that being said, always follow the signs when it’s time to transition to another version of yourself. I feel like since I made the move to New York City this past April, things have been making more sense lately. I’m glad I followed the signs when it was time to leave L.A. It was scary, but I knew deep down inside that I had to go. It was time to grow in my portfolio and as a person in general. It’s not been easy, but here I am – still standing in the Big Apple!
As in basketball, which is still my passion, I still feel like I’m on the bench waiting to get subbed in. I believe I have the skills, talent and personality, on-trend and knowledgeable about fashion.

Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
I don’t think a mentor is necessary. But If that’s what you’re looking for it’s just all about doing your own research and not being afraid to ask for help when needed. I will say though don’t be so quick to count on people because it can burn you in the long run. Use your mind, that’s your main tool in the meantime. I believe networking is important, and what worked for me was being my true self when meeting new people, in addition to being dependable and ready to work. I know I stand out from the crowd, and look forward to growing with a company in the fashion industry that recognizes and utilizes my talents and abilities. I work hard, and enjoy being a mentor for others as well.
