Life & Work with Momo of Los Angeles

Today we’d like to introduce you to Momo

Momo, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I came to Los Angeles as an exchange student two and a half years ago, without knowing any English. In the beginning, I couldn’t understand what the store clerks were saying or what was written around me, and every day felt overwhelming. Life was nothing like the LA I had imagined, and I cried a lot. But I made a conscious effort to be active, speaking with people in my broken English, going out without fear, and making friends. Slowly, I began to enjoy life and my English improved enough for daily conversations after about a year. Despite challenges like having my phone stolen and nearly getting into accidents, I fell in love with California—the weather and the warmth of the people. After my exchange program ended and I graduated from my university in Japan, I succeeded in returning as an MBA student. Now, I’m excited for the journey that lies ahead for me here in America.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The biggest challenge I faced was not being able to understand English. I often regretted not studying it when I was younger and felt discouraged comparing myself to others around me.
