Life & Work with Michelle Bongirno of High Desert

Today we’d like to introduce you to Michelle Bongirno.

Hi Michelle, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I started my photography back in college in 2008. I graduated with my BFA in Photography and started my business in 2011. I got here through hard work, sleepless nights, marketing, family, friends and so so so many referrals I can never thank my clients enough for supporting my work all these years.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It hasn’t always been a smooth road. There are slow seasons but I think for every business there are lows and highs. I specialize in outdoor photography. So weather plays a major factor in every session. There are months of slow booking because of it. The winter and being in the desert the dead of summer people don’t want to bare the weather. During the pandemic there was over 6 months where there were so many rules about not being able to work. You come to realize that you are a luxury business and not essential worker. Thankfully I was still able to stay a float during this time.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m a lifestyle and wedding photographer. I’m most proud of sticking with something I love even when it getting really hard with the long hours at an event to hours on the computer. Trying to give my clients the memories that will last them a lifetime even if it is just one part of their lives. I’m not sure exactly what sets me apart but a friend once told me I give a bouquet experience and that was really special.

We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
I define success in trying my best to give my clients a pleasant experience while trying to achieve their vision through my eyes. It is a great honor to have people hire you for how you see the world through the lens of your camera. Success isn’t about being the richest person at what you do, although that might be amazing. Getting to do what I love and trying to get better each session is a great dream come true.
