Life & Work with Melody J. Myers

Today we’d like to introduce you to Melody J. Myers.

Melody J., we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I’ve always loved music from a young age, my parents were always playing music all the time. My dad grew up in Seattle and went to shows throughout his teens. I started going to shows when I was in high school and made it my goal to go to as many shows as I could even when I got into my early 20s, I continued to go. When I first started going to shows I always brought a disposable camera, but I either never took photos or I was just so shy and full of anxiety to ever post the photos. I remember seeing one of my friends at the time getting into concert photography. I was so interested but so scared to start it at the same time. I finally built up the courage to try and began photographing for some publications here and there. While getting my degree in English Literature, I’d go out and photograph shows when I could. I never thought I’d do anything in music as I felt it would’ve ruined the experience for me. Going to shows has always been the only place where I truly felt like I fit in growing up, but to be able to incorporate something else that I’ve loved so much into it has been so much fun.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Honestly, it hasn’t always been a smooth road. Without giving too much detail, I’ve struggled with a lot internally and externally (more so internally, I believe). I believe these experiences has only taught me how to get through future hardships and let myself know that if I can get through that one extremely hard time I went through years ago, I can get through this rough patch too.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m a music and portrait photographer! The one thing I’m the most proud of is that I actually was able to get myself to go out and photograph my first show despite my anxieties. Oh man, I believe we’re all very different people. This industry is jam-packed with so many different types of people that we all have different attributes and so much more. When it comes to taking photos, I love them to be crispy and somewhat colorful, I try my best to stay away from black and white!

Alright, so to wrap up, is there anything else you’d like to share with us?
I’m half Filipino (and very proud), I hope to see more beabadoobee’s and Ena Mori’s in the near future. I hope more people pay attention to how incredible and beautiful Southeast Asian culture is 🙂
