Today we’d like to introduce you to Mary Anderson
Hi Mary, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I grew up in west des moines iowa and always knew I was supposed to be out in LA. I’ve wanted to be out here since I was at least 5. I knew I was destined for more. I saw Lady Gaga’s Paparazzi performance at the 2009 VMAs and was OBSESSED. I grew up in a very religious household and never knew how to express myself in an outward way. Gaga’s makeup and the way she was so unapologetically herself helped shape me into who I am. I had always been in love with makeup, but after seeing that performance I realized that I could express myself with it.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Absolutely not!! I’ve moved across the country to chase my dreams. There have been so many “no’s” or “maybe’s” and nothing comes from it. You have to be ready for the hardship and struggle. I have another job to support myself while I am on my journey to be a full time makeup artist. I miss my family and friends back in Iowa.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a makeup artist! I love to do it all, runway, being on set, red carpet, award shows, photo shoots, etc. I just love being creative with my clients to make their looks and wants come to life.
I’m definitely most proud of seeing myself and my work grow constantly. I am so proud that I’ve stuck it out in LA and fight to live my dreams.
What sets me apart from others is my “why”. Why do I do what I do? Yes, I love being a makeup artist and being creative, but at the end of the day it’s about my client in my chair. Seeing their face when I am done with the makeup is my favorite part of my job. Showing them how beautiful they are and accentuating their natural beauty is one of the best feelings in the world. Giving that person whatever amazing feeling they can get is why. It’s not about me, it’s about my clients.
What does success mean to you?
I think success is continuous. I don’t think it’s a certain point in someone’s life or career. For me just sticking it out and continuing to fight for what I want makes me successful. I’ve done the Grammys, assisted artists, and done so many other cool things, but I can’t let the weight of being “successful” define me.
