Life & Work with Marisa Lee of Los Angeles

Today we’d like to introduce you to Marisa Lee

Hi Marisa, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
When starting my tattoo business, I had an awareness of how I wanted to approach this venture. Previously, I founded a womenswear brand that I had for 5 years. The amount that you learn from starting your own company is unbeatable. No one can teach you what you will learn whether it be from a book, reading articles, or working for someone. This time around I knew my weak points, where I wanted to start focusing, and results I wanted to see.

Ever since I was younger I was always drawing. Which is the base of what tattooing is. My mentor reminds me to always keep drawing. No matter the storm of things that are happening with the business that I am running, I remember to draw every day. There’s a charm in this, I could be juggling so many things and what grounds me is my art. That’s something I cherish so much about tattooing. It is grounding. The art is always there to ground you once you realize you are an artist.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I believe reaching any goal is about making decisions. Even in life there is no smooth or direct road to follow. There are moments that you need to remind yourself to be appreciative and there are highs to be grateful enough to enjoy. Along my tattoo journey it has taught me so much about myself as an artist and pushed me to really start sharing my art to the world. In general I have an entrepreneurial mindset, so I see any bump in the road as a way to learn something new. Documenting everything is vital when you’re growing your business. Simultaneously, it is good to share your journey on your personal social media, a podcast, or Youtube channel. Getting to where I am at this point in time is from stepping out of my comfort zone and doing outreach while having curiosity to learn about other artists and their processes.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Currently as an artist I am focused on tattooing. My designs have an illustrative cartoon-like feel and are distinct in style. I enjoy meeting people along my tattoo journey and connecting with other artists. Art is meant to bring people together. Delving into the tattoo world has lead to my curiosity in visiting galleries and evolving even more as an artist. While I am not tattooing I work on oil paintings, write, and make ceramics to continue to express myself in other forms.

Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
Being proactive with communication is very important. If you are an artist, I recommend sharing your artwork starting now. Your artwork will continue to evolve and you will get to see your creations from a wider angle which I think is key to growing. This gives you more power and control when making your dreams come true. Start sharing your story and keep reiterating it, till it makes the most sense to you and is easily digestible for others. This is your sign to start!
