Life & Work with Marcy Dugan of Los Ángeles Area

Today we’d like to introduce you to Marcy Dugan.

Hi Marcy, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Professional Photographers of California, Inc. (PPC) is a nonprofit 501(c)(6) trade association founded in 1947 with a mission to support and advance professional photographers throughout the state. What began as a collective of photographers seeking connection and growth has evolved into a robust organization dedicated to education, collaboration, and professional excellence.
Today, PPC provides a strong network where photographers can interact, exchange ideas, and empower one another through ongoing education. By taking advantage of PPC’s educational programs and resources, members develop critical technical, creative, and business skills that support long-term career success.
One of PPC’s cornerstone offerings is West Coast School, widely regarded as one of the finest photographic schools in the nation. Held annually, West Coast School is an immersive, multi-day educational experience led by nationally acclaimed industry professionals. The school offers practical, real-world instruction designed to help photographers build satisfying and prosperous careers. Classes serve a wide range of photographic interests —from high school seniors to professionals specializing in commercial, landscape and nature, and portrait photography. This year’s session will be held at Tahquitz Pines Retreat in Idyllwild, California, June 7–11, 2026.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Like most organizations, our journey hasn’t been without challenges. One ongoing struggle is keeping pace with rapidly evolving technology and ensuring our members have access to current, meaningful learning opportunities. Another significant challenge is attracting the next generation to carry on the mission of the organization as a resource of collective knowledge. Many emerging photographers believe everything can be learned through online social platforms. While these resources do provide some education, becoming a professional photographer—and building a sustainable, successful business—requires far more than what can be gained from videos alone.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
The Professional Photographers of California is a non-profit trade organization dedicated to enhancing photography through the passionate pursuit of education, sharing and unity.

Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
One of the greatest satisfactions is helping our members succeed in their businesses through education and mentorship. By supporting their growth, we strengthen the profession as a whole and help ensure the future success of our craft.
