Life & Work with Lauren S Thompson of Laurel Canyon

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lauren S Thompson

Hi Lauren S, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I grew up in South Dakota and was fortunate to travel internationally from a very young age. As soon as I began to see different cultures and ways of life, I knew I was leaving South Dakota by the age of five or six.

And I did so as soon as I graduated high school. I came to Los Angeles and went to fashion school, worked in the fashion industry for a while, and did some stints on the East Coast for a few years. When I came back to LA in 2017, I got a job at a concrete company, a startup that specialized in high-performance concrete, and learned so much about materials, engineering, and architecture.

I started breathwork in 2018 thanks to my cousin Brian, who is an amazing breathwork facilitator in the Midwest. My entire path kind of shifted after I took breathwork seriously and I’ve had a dedicated daily practice since then. I have seen my life simultaneously expand as my breathwork and meditation practice has expanded.

This has led me to get a couple of breathwork certifications and start a separate business to teach breathwork and provide breathwork therapy for deep states of healing physically, mentally, and emotionally.

After a few years at the concrete company, lockdown happened, and I decided to take a furniture certificate program at Pratt Institute. I fell in love with design and found my flow, finally scratching this itch or resolving this lifelong search of desiring to create but not knowing what medium was appropriate for me.

I found my flow in furniture and have since been collaborating with various fabricators and creatives to build what is now my namesake company.

Breathwork is for sure the foundation of my creative process and my life process. Anytime I’m seeking clarity—whether it’s creatively, in relationships, or within myself as I navigate the voice inside my head—breathwork is the tool I consistently seek and return to. It helps me find answers, move forward, and assist others.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
In terms of obstacles and challenges, I’m really attracted to materials that are heavy, hard, sharp, and fragile. I don’t foresee that changing anytime soon. Although it’s a cool contrast with the lightness I seek spiritually and in my daily approach to life, it has presented a lot of resistance in terms of logistics, shipping, and installing my pieces.

I produce all my pieces in Bangalore, India—the process of shipping my pieces from India to their destinations and hoping they arrive safely is challenging. Additionally, finding the right people to safely install them adds to the difficulty.

The sheer weight of these pieces is powerful and contributes to the energy people receive from my work, but it also drains my energy at times.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
The title of my debut collection is Tetrastella

It represents a physical concept crafted with geometric precision, resulting in a synthesis of granite and intricate design elements.

The creation of Tetrastella was a transformative journey for me, merging my fascination with Sacred Geometry with a period of deep introspection and contemplation.

At the heart of Tetrastella lies a symmetrical star-like shape, created by intersecting tetrahedral triangles in granite.

My deep affinity for bold shapes and intentional design is evident throughout Tetrastella. Each piece reflects years of meticulous craftsmanship and thoughtful exploration.

Rooted in meaningful intent, Tetrastella serves as both statement pieces and avenues for meditation.

Collaborating closely with TAB surfaces, an impressive granite operation based in Bangalore, India, and with refinement and innovation, I translated my vision into reality, establishing a seamless infrastructure for production.

We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
I have two certifications in the Japanese healing practice of Reiki from Lara Elliott, a woman that is a wealth of knowledge and wisdom.
