Today we’d like to introduce you to Larry White.
Hi Larry, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
After graduating from California College of Arts & Crafts with a degree in fine arts I started doing graphic design work which lead to a job working for a fiberglass and resin distributor. in 1979 Our primary clientele was the surfboard industry. Our headquarters were in Dana Point, home base for the surf industry. I began surfing again and also began making surfboards. I went back to college to learn about the use of computers in art and graphic design. This lead to a career as a professor of art at Long Beach City College where I worked for over 20 years. All the while I continued to surf and make surfboards. I retired from City College in 2010 and subsequently moved back to Dana Point. I continue to make surfboards and stay abreast of the industry.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I have to say that other than periods of slow sales, it has been a smooth ride meeting a lot of amazing people and cultural icons along the way.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I shape surfboards, specializing in long boards, generally from eight feet up to eleven feet in length with the majority being in the nine foot range. I am proud that I am known among many of the icons of the industry for my longevity and creativity. I was one of the first people to make tri-finned longboards and a pioneer in the use of epoxy resin rather than polyester.
Pricing:
- I charge $200 for a shape
- I have a very low markup on glassing. Lower than most.
- Finished boards generally run from $900 to $1500
