Today we’d like to introduce you to Kevin Sameski
Hi Kevin , can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I kicked off my dance career in 2016 at a local competitive dance program in Needham, MA where I began training in all genres of learning and styles of exploring. I then went on to attend Pace University for 3 years as a Commercial Dance Major where I grew leaps and bounds beyond my greatest imagination. I always had a strong trust in myself and the craving for forging my own path only developed more during my time in NYC; which is why taking a leave of absence my third year at Pace was something I found comfort in. As scary as departing a collegiate program was, it was a beautiful blessing that continues to give back to me to this day. Since dropping out and moving to LA in 2023, I am grateful to say I have toured with Karol G in Latin America and Europe, Assitant Choreographed for Tinashe, and most recently danced for Megan Moroney at this years New Years Rockin Eve. As wonderful and exciting as this all sounds, the best part of my career has been the discovery I have found within myself, the inner child I have strived to fulfill every single day. My artistry and athleticism has always been present for as long as I can recall. From learning how to sew with my great aunt over summers to painting alongside my late grandfather, and soon enough participating in recreational sports like basketball and baseball during my early years; I find this all has led to me to becoming the artist, choreographer, and dancer that I am today. Each experience gifting me fresh and tired lessons, new and old buds of knowledge, all taking place in familiar and unfamiliar environments: an art studio, a kitchen, a court, and later a dance space. When you ask what my story is, these are the things I think of first. Where I am, who I am, but my favorite being why I am. Why dance? Aside from it being my outlet, my passion, the article of life I connect to most, I find my why is because it is what 6 year old Kevin was itching to be apart of most. A community where creativity is invited, drive and motivation is expected, and being different is loved. A community where I feel heard, accepted, and supported as an artist and a human being. Dance is a relationship, one form being solely between me and the art, another form between me and a stadium of 85,000 people. It’s amazing. That’s the beauty I find within what i do.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It definitely has not been a smooth road, however I will say it has always had a gorgeous view. As artists we all experience difficulties, whether that be internal, external, or both depends on the person. For me, I find it has always been a mix. Finding my voice wasn’t easy, nor was it ever definite. It is freeing to express now that my limits feel boundless where I stand today. However, if you asked me 3 years ago, I would argue that limits and boundaries are all I felt, even all I ever saw. I grew up with many responsibilities and many dreams. Balancing those became overwhelming at times and often led to me losing myself in the chaos of my adolescence. Life at home wasn’t ever easy and piling that on top of school and dance made it hard for me to navigate who I am. It wasn’t until I was 20 that I came out as gay and truly began to accept who I was beyond dance. In doing so, it only made my artistry that much more reflective of my soul. I owe a lot of my self acceptance to my second mom, Shawna, who I have always considered to be my light and role model. She’s gotten me through some of my darkest times and has held my heart with sincerity all of my career. The road may have been full of twists, turns, detours, flat tires, empty tanks, and faded tints but one thing that never changed was the love for the ride; and for that lesson, I thank the journey.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a dancer, educator, and choreographer. I am most known for my creativity, my professionalism, and my ability to take on a challenge. I specialize in choreography and have always found this to be my preferred creative outlet. It is an ongoing endeavor but one that continues to prove itself worthy of any hardships it bears. I am most proud of my latest assistant choreography credit on Tinahses No Broke Boys Music Video alongside choreographer Monica Giavanna. I felt immense fulfillment on this job and in holding this position for such an astounding artist like T. The pride comes from a place of belonging and timing aligning with the people I got to share this experience with. Little Kev dreamed of doing what I get to do each and every day.
I find my versatility is what often sets me apart from others. I really do ebb and flow between many styles and genres of dance. I have worked on jobs like Karol G where hip hop is the majority of what is asked of me, or even being a principle dancer for Tiler Peck where Ballet is the focus. I take pride in being malleable and ready to take on any and every opportunity that comes my way!
Any big plans?
My future has yet to be written. I see myself taking on many roles, many experiences, and connecting with many more artists. As of right now, I am working on developing my choreographic portfolio more and more, and in doing so rekindling my love for learning and teaching. I see myself sharing my passion with the next generation as much as I see myself absorbing from the generation before me.
