Today we’d like to introduce you to Keanu Wilson.
Hi Keanu, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
When the pandemic forced everything to shut down, I found myself unemployed and spending a significant amount of time at home. It was during this period that I turned to drawing on my iPad as a creative outlet. Gradually, I started sharing my artwork on Instagram under the pseudonym Prowlanu. To my surprise, my art gained traction, and I eventually embraced the title of an artist. My work primarily focuses on showcasing the native flora and fauna of Hawaiʻi. Influenced by my surroundings, I strive to capture the essence of the islands through minimalist prints infused with my distinctive style. I blend textures to bridge the gap between digital and traditional art, creating a unique visual experience.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Throughout my journey of evolving as an artist, I’ve encountered numerous peaks and valleys. One significant hurdle I’ve grappled with is battling imposter syndrome. Without any formal art education or extensive background in the field, merely picking up a pen one day led to my artistic journey unfolding naturally. Consequently, confidently embracing the title of an artist proved to be a daunting task, as I constantly found myself comparing my work to that of established artists. However, it has been incredibly empowering and liberating to challenge the conventional notion that formal training and years of experience is a prerequisite for artistic legitimacy.
Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a digital artist who specializes in illustrating plants and animal species native to Hawaiʻi. I am most known for my unique POV and use of natural elements in my pieces.
What was your favorite childhood memory?
Growing up in a small town in Connecticut, my favorite childhood memories revolve around the moments spent at my grandparents’ home. Each weekend, my grandmother would involve me in the kitchen, where we established the tradition of preparing French toast together every Saturday. Unsurprisingly, French toast remains one of my favorite foods to this day. Our weekends were filled with movie marathons, board games, and whatever else came our way. These memories are among my most cherished possessions.
