Today we’d like to introduce you to Janiya Sherman
Hi Janiya, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Well, I was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota & raised in a small part of Illinois called Kankakee. Nobody has ever heard of it. Once I reached my sophomore year, I moved to Atlanta Georgia. After I graduated I moved to Los Angeles to study Acting for the Camera. Once I got here I started to fall in love with fashion. Trying to play with color and texture, attempting to change the “social norm” of fashion.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely has not been a smooth road! I questioned myself so many times on the way. I was scared that because of my size I wouldn’t be as accepted in the fashion community. I’ve had a very amazing support system. Flying out all the way across the world by myself was so hard, but i’ve met so many people who motivated me to always stay true to myself, regardless of anyone’s opinions.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I like to call myself a Certified Fashion Nerd ! Janiya is my name and Fashion is my game. I would say i’m known for a few things. Poetry, Acting, Being ridiculously hilarious, but for the most part Fashion. I like to mix different styles and aesthetics. Why limit yourself, you know ? Hm, what sets me apart of from others ? I would say my confidence honestly. My ability to look however I want and not ever care about someone’s comments. People want to impress society, but why ? I’m proud of me honestly. Living in a small town where there is absolutely nothing happening, I limited myself so much that I never thought I would be able to do the things I am doing now if that makes sense.
