Life & Work with Jake Berry of Costa Mesa

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jake Berry.

Hi Jake, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I’m a self-taught tattoo artist who learned how to tattoo on my friends. Once I started travelling, meeting other artists and seeing what was possible I really wanted to push myself to get better. I’ve always loved black and grey realism and capturing the smallest details that make a piece hyper realistic. My Tattoo journey started as an accident and I’m so grateful I fell into it. I had no idea what was ahead of me but I couldn’t imagine doing anything else now.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has been a relatively smooth road. Of course there has been challenges but there will always be challenges and opportunities to learn and grow. I had to learn how to market myself, be confident in my work, manage other artists in my studio and many other things that I’ve had no prior experience in. But no one knows how to do anything until you try it!

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a tattoo artist who specialises in black and grey micro-realism. I am known for capturing hyper-realistic details in a small tattoo. I am most proud of how far I’ve come being a self-taught artist. I think my passion and desire to learn and grow is what sets me apart.

Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
Ask questions. Put yourself out there! Don’t worry about being annoying, be respectful but be annoying! Ask questions. Be a sponge. Soak up as much knowledge and information as you can especially from people who are further along than you. Reach out to people on social media. People are nicer than you think.
