Today we’d like to introduce you to Holly Fowler.
Hi Holly, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I am an actress and an occasional producer, I started out in small musical theater productions. ( I am a former dancer) I’ve been acting since 2009 mostly in short films. Over the last five years a few of the short films have led to bigger roles in indie feature films such as Cash for Gold and my recent casting as Delaney in the upcoming film Where the Sweetgrass Grows. A short film called “The Ride” written and produced by my classmate Hunter Shigley and has 138K views on u-tube, I play a southern con-artist housewife that is always causing mayhem with her husband. I love collaborating with my actor friends and classmates, for me these little roles in short films (sometimes even just one line) have propelled me into bigger and better productions and I’m so grateful.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
There certainly have been many obstacles, where do I start?! Lol
When I started I did not have an Agent or a talent manager, I knocked on doors for years and the answer was a consisted no.
It’s a double edge sword because if you don’t have a solid resume of credits nobody wants to represent you, but you need representation to book work. I had to start thinking outside the box as I had my son and an elderly parent to take care of. knocking on doors wasn’t working so I had to figure out how to sneak in the back door or side door lol. I started networking with writers, reading their scripts and helping others make their dream a reality, many times finding locations for them to film for free and bringing others on board to help with production.
Another challenge in this business is learning how to deal with the “nos”/rejection, you have to be your biggest fan and your own cheerleader, if you don’t believe in you no one else will either.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am currently focused on a film in production called “Charlotte” written and directed by Danielle Napier, I play the snobby and unhinged Alexis. I am an actor so I love playing all sorts of different characters. I love really digging into the emotional depth, what is going on beneath the surface, what is being said without being said.. what secrets are they holding? I’ve played a police officer, con-artist southern wife, a party girl, an aging groupie and most recently I’ve been cast as Delaney (a physic medium, she solves murders).
Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
My advice would be to get into a great acting class, make friends with your fellow actors and be excited about their projects.. cheer them on and help them to succeed, that has helped me more than anything. It also takes time and patience to find the right acting coach, Billy Gallo has been my coach for almost ten years and his direction has helped me take my craft to the next level.
