Life & Work with Gwen Bijayayothin of Cypress

Today we’d like to introduce you to Gwen Bijayayothin.

Hi Gwen , we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I was born in Thailand to Thai and Vietnamese parents, and moved to California in 2002 with the dream of building a better future. Shortly after arriving, I began my journey in nursing — a career that has become both my passion and my purpose. I earned my first nursing degree and immediately fell in love with the art of caring for others.

Over the next several years, I worked as a Registered Nurse while continuing my education. In 2015, I graduated from Western University of Health Sciences with my Master of Science in Nursing and became a certified Family Nurse Practitioner. During that time, I was honored with the nationally recognized award Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges, which encouraged me to keep pushing forward.

My thirst for knowledge led me to pursue my Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) degree, which I completed in 2019 through California State University, Fullerton/Long Beach/Los Angeles. I am also a proud member of the Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing.

Throughout my 18+ years in healthcare, I’ve worked in diverse clinical settings — from medical-surgical and OB/GYN to emergency medicine — but it was in aesthetic medicine that I truly found my calling. I began training in non-surgical aesthetic procedures in 2018 and instantly fell in love with the intersection of science, artistry, and confidence-building.

When the COVID-19 pandemic forced med spas to close, I returned to the frontlines as a Nurse Practitioner in the emergency room. That experience was humbling and life-changing, but once the world began to reopen, I knew it was time to fully dedicate myself to my true passion: aesthetics. I decided to leave hospital work entirely and focus on helping people feel beautiful, confident, and empowered through my own practice, Skin Boutique Medical Aesthetics.

Today, aesthetic medicine is where my heart lies. It allows me to combine advanced medical science with creativity — helping patients look and feel like the best versions of themselves. Every face tells a story, and I’m grateful to be a small part of helping people see the beauty that’s already within them.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Not at all — but every challenge has helped me grow into the business owner I am today. Coming from a strong clinical background, the transition into running my own business was a completely new learning curve. The medical side came naturally to me, but the administrative and business aspects were a whole different world — things like marketing, accounting, lease negotiations, and operations were areas I had to learn from scratch.

In the beginning, I wore every hat — provider, manager, receptionist, and even janitor at times. Balancing patient care while trying to build the business structure behind the scenes was overwhelming, but it also taught me so much about resilience and leadership. Over time, I learned to delegate, build a supportive team, and trust the process.

Every obstacle pushed me to level up — not just as a practitioner, but as an entrepreneur. Looking back, the struggles were all part of the foundation that helped me build Skin Boutique into what it is today.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m the founder and lead aesthetic Nurse Practitioner at Skin Boutique Medical Aesthetics, where we specialize in non-surgical facial rejuvenation and creating natural, harmonious results. My focus is on helping patients enhance their natural beauty rather than changing how they look — my philosophy has always been “Your beauty, Elevated.”

I specialize in advanced injectable treatments such as neuromodulators, dermal fillers, biostimulators, and skin-rejuvenating procedures like microneedling, RF tightening, and regenerative therapies. I’m also passionate about educating patients on collagen banking — helping them understand that aesthetic treatments can be both preventative and restorative when done thoughtfully and consistently.

What I’m most proud of is the trust I’ve built with my patients. Many have been with me for years, and they see Skin Boutique as more than just a med spa — it’s a place where they feel seen, cared for, and empowered. I also strongly believe in advocating for my patients — including saying no to treatments they don’t truly need. My role is not just to enhance beauty, but to protect it.

What sets me apart is my medical background combined with an artistic eye and a genuine passion for patient care. Every treatment I perform is tailored to the individual — never one-size-fits-all. My patients often say my approach feels more like a collaboration than a transaction, and that means the world to me.

We’re currently expanding into a new, state-of-the-art med spa to elevate our client experience even further — a space that reflects the calm, luxury, and artistry at the heart of the Skin Boutique brand.

Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
My biggest piece of advice is to always put patient safety first. In aesthetics, we’re not just treating faces — we’re treating real people, and every injection carries responsibility. For new injectors, I can’t emphasize enough the importance of continuous education. Seek out reputable mentors, attend hands-on trainings, and never stop learning before deciding to open your own practice. Skill and knowledge are what truly build confidence — both yours and your patient’s.

I also wish I had known more about the business side early on. It’s easy to get caught up in the excitement and want to invest in every new device or machine, but be smart and intentional with your finances. Start small, master your craft, and let your results speak for you — the growth will come naturally.

Above all, lead with integrity, stay humble, and remember that this field is about helping people feel their best — safely, ethically, and beautifully.
