Today we’d like to introduce you to Fih
Hi Fih, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I grew up in Badlwin Hills/Crenshaw as a kid so I’m a LA Native to my core. I didn’t grow up in a musical family, but I’ve always had a passion and keen interest for it. I was the kid who would stay up at 1 in the morning watching best 100 rap songs of the 90s and would write all the songs I loved down so I could go download it later. Ironically sports is what guided me towards pursuing a music career. I was recruited to go play at NYU in New York where I studied music and how it can be used as a tool of social activism. And once I got there it was over with. That city is filled with so many passionate creatives who inspired me to actually pursue this life long dream of mine. I began collaborating with different producers and started dropping songs & doing shows. Once I graduated from college I decided to move back to LA and continue my musical journey in my hometown. My city is filled with so many crazy talented artists and producers that I’ve been so lucky to work with. Last year I dropped my first EP, La Brea Baby, produced by Nate Fox & Chailatay. I think that was really the start of me experimenting with different genres and how it could fit into my music. Fast forwarding to now I just dropped my new single, “Hey Listen,” produced by Godchild & Chailatay. It’s definitely different from my prior songs and has more of an alt feel to it. But I’m ecstatic that it’s finally out because it’s the start of sharing my journey into this new sound with my listeners.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
This journey has definitely had it’s fair share of turbulence man. Being an independent artist is not for the weak haha. Feeling like you’re in this pursuit alone and having to wear multiple hats to push your art can really wear on you. It can make you question your worth or talent. “Like are these songs even good enough? Am I good enough?” And while you’re feeling these things you have to keep investing in yourself and grind through it all. But all I can say is that having a community of like minded artists around you can make a complete 180. There will always be struggles and fails along the way, but it’s a whole lot better when you have people around you who believe in what you’re doing.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m known for being a singer/songwriter. I’m most proud of the new music that I’ve been currently been working on. Finding my sound that’s authentic to me feels like I’ve learned a new part of myself. And for that I’m truly grateful and grateful for the producers & artists that helped me find it. I think what sets me apart is my songwriting and the honesty in my lyrics. I’m a lover girl so I’ve experienced a lot of love and heartbreak throughout my life. And I know there are so many people that have as well. So my intention with every song is not only to emote whatever it is I’m feeling, but hopefully bring comfort to whoever is listening. Whether that’s thousands of people or just five.
We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
My favorite memory as a kid was when I went to the Jay Z, Blueprint Tour with my cousin and best friend. I listened to him heavily growing up and had been begging my mom to let me go to a concert. i just remember being all the way up in the nosebleeds, weed smoke everywhere, and everyone just rapping along. Just seeing how music can make people feel and forget about the outside world was unforgettable. It’s honestly a huge part of why I’m in music now. I was literally 12 and it’s still by far my favorite concert.
