Life & Work with Feist Hugo of Pasadena

Today we’d like to introduce you to Feist Hugo

Hi FEIST, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Hey, I’m Hugo Feist. I’m a tattoo artist specializing in black and gray realism, with a strong focus on dark fantasy. I wouldn’t say I set out to be a tattoo artist from the start—it was more of a journey that led me here. I grew up in Annecy, France, and art has always been a part of my life, but tattooing became my main passion when I realized it allowed me to bring my vision to life in a way that felt both personal and permanent.

My style is often described as “refined but disturbed,” which I think sums it up well. I like creating pieces that feel elegant but also carry a certain unease—something that makes you stop and think. A lot of my inspiration comes from classical painters like Caravaggio and Rubens, but also from more modern artists like Roberto Ferri and Tom Bagshaw. I love the way they play with contrast, light, and emotion, and I try to bring that same depth into my tattoos.

Over the years, I’ve had the chance to work in different studios around the world and meet some incredible artists along the way. Travel has been a huge part of my career, and it’s given me the opportunity to grow, both artistically and personally. Now, I’m based in Pasadena, California, but I still love taking guest spots and attending conventions whenever I can.

More recently, I’ve started sharing my experience through online courses. I never really saw myself as a teacher, but I know how tough it can be when you’re trying to develop your skills, and if I can help someone else find their path in tattooing, that means a lot to me.

At the end of the day, I just love what I do. I’m grateful for the people who trust me with their skin and their stories, and I hope to keep pushing my work further, always learning and Evolving

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. Like any artist, I’ve had my fair share of struggles—doubting myself, pushing through creative blocks, and trying to find my own voice in a world full of insanely talented people. In the beginning, it was tough just getting opportunities and proving myself. Tattooing is an industry where skill and reputation take time to build, and there were moments when I wasn’t sure if I’d make it.

Moving around a lot for work has also been challenging. While traveling has shaped me as an artist, it’s also meant starting over in new places, adjusting to different cultures, and constantly stepping out of my comfort zone. And of course, there’s the mental and physical toll—long hours, perfectionism, and the pressure to always improve.

But I think those struggles have been necessary. They’ve pushed me to grow, to stay hungry, and to never take this path for granted. Every challenge has led to something valuable, whether it’s learning from mistakes, meeting the right people, or simply becoming more resilient. At the end of the day, I wouldn’t change any of it.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m a tattoo artist specializing in black and gray realism, with a focus on dark fantasy themes. My work blends refined details with an unsettling edge—I like to create pieces that feel elegant but also make you think twice. I draw a lot of inspiration from classical painters like Caravaggio and Rubens, as well as modern artists who play with light and shadow in dramatic ways.

What I’m most proud of is the trust my clients place in me. Tattooing is such a personal thing, and the fact that people allow me to create something permanent on their skin means everything. I think what sets me apart is my approach—I want each tattoo to feel like a true work of art, not just a design on the skin. I put a lot of thought into composition, flow, and storytelling, making sure each piece resonates with the person wearing it.

Beyond tattooing, I’ve also started sharing my knowledge through online courses. It wasn’t something I planned on doing, but I know how hard it is when you’re starting out, trying to find your voice. If I can help other artists develop their skills and confidence, that’s a win for me.

At the end of the day, I just love what I do. It’s not always easy, but every challenge, every piece, and every client makes it worth it.

So, before we go, how can our readers or others connect or collaborate with you? How can they support you?
I’m always open to working with people who share a passion for art, tattooing, and creative expression. Clients can book with me through my website or social media, where I post updates on my availability, guest spots, and upcoming projects.

For collaborations, I love working with other artists, whether it’s for tattoo projects, fine art, or even creative crossovers like photography, fashion, or digital media. I’m especially interested in working with brands or individuals who align with my dark fantasy and realism aesthetic.

Support means a lot to me, and the best way people can support my work is by sharing it, engaging with it, and spreading the word. Whether it’s through social media, attending conventions, or simply appreciating the art, every bit of support helps keep the creative momentum going.

If you’re interested in collaborating, feel free to reach out—I’m always excited to explore new ideas and push creative boundaries.
