Life & Work with Farah (Firefly) Mitha of Los Angeles

Today we’d like to introduce you to Farah (Firefly) Mitha

Farah, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Hey everyone! My name is Farah, and I’m an artist, songwriter, actor, speaker, and founder of the empowerment brand Firefly World.

My story begins in Ottawa, Canada, where I grew up as a busy kid involved in sports and music. Despite appearing confident and happy, I grappled with an invisible struggle—the feeling of not being good enough. This emotional battle led to loneliness and insecurities, as I felt an overwhelming need to prove my worth. The injustices and inequalities around me further intensified these feelings, leaving me with emotions I didn’t know how to process. Thankfully, I found solace in music; the artists and songs I connected with became my refuge and my friends. From that moment, I knew I wanted to sing and write music to inspire others, helping them feel less alone in their own struggles.

However, growing up in a South Asian household, the creative path was not seen as a viable career. Pursuing music as a hobby was accepted, but the expectation was to follow a more traditional route. So, I set my sights on becoming a doctor, earning my bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Physical Therapy. I even started applying to medical schools, thinking I was on the right track. But during a pivotal medical school interview, I felt a profound shift; I realized that I had been ignoring my true calling. I made a deal with God: if I got in, I would go, but if not, I would take it as a sign to follow my heart. I began praying not to be accepted, and when I got my answer, I finally understood it was time to pursue my creative dreams.

I transitioned to part-time work, found a manager, and immersed myself in acting and singing classes, officially starting my journey as an artist. Living in Toronto at the time, my mission became clear: to use my art to inspire and uplift others. What I never anticipated was how this journey would become a channel for my own healing as well as that of others. It has been a rollercoaster ride filled with exhilarating highs—performing on stage and in front of the camera worldwide—and challenging lows marked by rejection and the necessity to start over.

Five years ago, I made the life-changing decision to move to LA, which has been one of the best choices I’ve ever made. Being surrounded by incredibly talented individuals pushed me to refine my craft further. Since then, I have been traveling back and forth between LA and Toronto, engaging in diverse music and acting projects that have enriched my life in countless ways.

Last year, I officially launched the Firefly World brand, focusing on empowerment and inspiration through music. My goal is to use the power of art and storytelling to inspire, especially young people, and encourage healthy emotional coping skills, and address the pressing mental health crisis. It’s a journey of continuous growth, and I’m incredibly grateful for the opportunity to connect with others through music and create a positive impact.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The road has certainly not been smooth, but every bump and detour has played a vital role in shaping who I am as an artist and the mission behind Firefly World. In the beginning, I grappled with the internal struggle of pursuing my passion for music while navigating the expectations of my South Asian upbringing. Balancing the desire to please my family with the yearning to express myself creatively and make a difference in the world was incredibly challenging. It often felt like I was living two lives—one that adhered to societal expectations and another that longed to pursue what my heart was really calling for.

Once I made the leap to let go of the medical school path and pursue my artistic dreams, I was met with a whirlwind of experiences—some exhilarating and others deeply discouraging. The music industry can be brutal, filled with rejection, doubt, manipulative forces, a ton of insecurities and moments of vulnerability. I faced numerous setbacks, including the harsh realities of not everyone having your best interest, the constant hustle to get noticed, the spending of my life’s savings and the need to build a brand from the ground up. There were times when I questioned my path, wondering if I was good enough to succeed, or the anxiety of what I was missing, in such a competitive field.

One of the most significant struggles has been the fear of failure. As someone who has always been driven to prove my worth, the fear of not meeting my own expectations or letting others down was daunting. However, I’ve learned to embrace failure as a part of the process. Each setback has become a lesson that has guided me toward growth and resilience and it has taught me one of the most important lessons in life – surrendering to the journey. The outcome is not the most important part, the journey is.

Moving to Los Angeles was another leap of faith filled with uncertainty. It meant starting over in a new city, far from the comfort of familiarity. The pressure to adapt quickly and prove myself in a vibrant artistic community was intense. But it also offered me the opportunity to connect with incredible talent, mentors, and like-minded individuals who inspired me to push my boundaries.

Despite these challenges, I’ve always tried to remain focused on my mission to inspire and uplift others through my art. The struggles have deepened my empathy and understanding, fueling my passion for creating music that resonates with those facing their own battles. Every obstacle has been a stepping stone, and the journey continues to be one of self-discovery, healing, and empowerment.

Ultimately, I believe that the challenges I’ve faced have been essential in shaping Firefly World into a relevant and needed brand. My goal is to create a safe space for others to express their feelings and connect through music, showing them that they are not alone in their struggles. The road may be rocky, but it’s all part of the beautiful journey that fuels my passion and commitment to making a difference.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m Farah, also known as Firefly, and my work revolves around music and the transformative power it has to inspire, heal, and connect people. As a singer-songwriter, I specialize in crafting uplifting, anthemic songs that resonate with diverse audiences. My music blends various genres, creating a unique sound that I like to call “World Pop with a Soul.” Each song is infused with my personal experiences, emotions, and the desire to empower listeners to embrace their true selves.

At the core of my artistic mission is the empowerment brand I founded, Firefly World. Through this platform, I aim to inspire everyone, but youth especially, and help them navigate the complexities of life and mental health through music and storytelling. I’m passionate about creating an inclusive space where individuals can express themselves and feel supported in their journeys. I believe that music is a universal language that can break down barriers and foster connection, and my goal is to harness that power to uplift and inspire.

What I’m most proud of is the impact my music has had on listeners. Hearing stories of how my songs have resonated with someone going through a tough time or how they’ve inspired someone to embrace their individuality fills my heart with joy. Additionally, launching Firefly World and its initiatives to address the rising youth mental health crisis has been incredibly fulfilling. I’m dedicated to using my platform to create positive change and empower the next generation.

What sets me apart from others is my authentic approach to artistry. I strive to be vulnerable and relatable in my music, allowing my audience to connect with the raw emotions behind my lyrics. My multicultural background and personal experiences have shaped my perspective and artistry, giving me a unique voice in the music industry. I aim to create a sense of community through my work, inviting others to join me on this journey of self-discovery and empowerment.

Ultimately, my mission is to create a ripple effect of positivity and healing through music, and I’m excited to continue evolving as an artist and leader in this space.

Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
Looking back on my journey, there are several lessons I wish I had embraced earlier. First and foremost, I wish I had taken the time to truly discover who I wanted to be as an artist. Instead of following trends or the paths of others, investing in self-reflection and research would have been invaluable. It’s crucial to carve out your unique identity in the music industry, as this authenticity is what resonates most with audiences.

I also wish I had been more responsible with my finances. In the early days, I was impulsive and spent my earnings without considering my savings. Developing a solid financial plan and understanding the importance of budgeting can provide a safety net that allows you to invest in your artistry more sustainably. This is something that isn’t easy for most artists, it’s the exact opposite skill set, but trust me, it is worth it.

Additionally, I wish I had dedicated more time to learning an instrument or a “hard” skill that could independently generate income. Acquiring a skill like playing an instrument, producing, engineering, DJ’ing, not only enhances your musicality but also reduces dependency on others, allowing you to create and perform with more autonomy. It can also open up various avenues for income, from teaching to session work and starting your own business.

Mindset is another key aspect I wish I had prioritized. Embracing an optimistic outlook and understanding your personality can significantly shape your artistic journey. For instance, if you thrive in secure environments, it might be wise to focus on a financially sustainable aspect of the arts, rather than diving headfirst into the unpredictable rollercoaster of being a full-time artist. On the other hand, if you thrive in more fluid, flexible situations, don’t be afraid to take risks—just be mindful of your mental health and well-being.

It’s vital to learn to embrace the lifelong journey of being an artist. Strive for balance by being present and enjoying the journey while also thinking ahead about your goals and what will ultimately bring you happiness in all facets of life. Too many artists focus solely on immediate career satisfaction, neglecting other important areas, like family and personal relationships. Taking a holistic approach to your life can lead to a richer, more fulfilling existence – because ultimately there are no guarantees.

For those just starting out, my advice is to invest time in self-discovery. Take courses, seek mentorship, and don’t rush the process. Understand your unique voice and the message you want to share. Be mindful of your finances—set aside a portion of your income as savings and budget wisely for both your personal needs and your artistic endeavors.

Trust in your journey, stay true to yourself while being open to feedback, have a GREAT personality full of openness and gratitude and allow your unique light to shine. Embrace both the struggles and the joys; they are all part of the beautiful tapestry of your artistic life.
