Today we’d like to introduce you to Emily Vann.
Hi Emily, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Thank you so much for giving me this opportunity to share my passion. At the age of 7 years old, I would take alcohol, matches, a needle, and a band-aid and give my younger cousin “shots” under the kitchen table, which, of course, was my office (laughing). Caring for people has always come easy because that’s what I have been created to do. I have always been the friend who talked others through their tears. In my senior year of high school, I took vocational training that certified me as a CNA. That’s when I knew I was destined to become a nurse. I just knew my purpose was to be a Registered Nurse and care for the sick. When I was 26, I was standing in my shower and had a vision that was so clear it was startling. I was to counsel women between the ages of 18-80, and if I could change their minds, I could change their life. It was so vivid that it brought me to tears. I ran out of the bathroom and told my new husband. By the end of the day, it became just another random idea. In January 2021, 30 years into my career, thriving in all areas I have worked in, I received a message from a patient that sparked a whole new journey in me. I realized I still needed to fulfill my purpose. I have been working in my calling but not my soul’s purpose. My newfound journey has evolved into StraightTalk with Sissy LLC. I am finally in the place I need to be in to fulfill my soul’s purpose. My mission is to change the world by normalizing Sexual Health conversations, eliminating the shame and devastation experienced by women that are associated with the Herpesviridae family/STIs, and teaching a new generation how to remain free from the victimization of sexually transmitted infections. I never imagined this for myself, but I am now happy to embrace and move forward.
At 52, I can tell you my soul’s purpose, my assignment, is to Galvanize Goddesses!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
“I found it easy to create and develop my mission and brand, but marketing my business has been challenging, especially since I never wanted to be a business owner. Starting a virtual business as a black woman who wants to be herself is even more difficult. The masses have certain expectations for how you should look and speak, and if you don’t meet those standards, you’re considered unprofessional or unknowledgeable. It’s also hard to obtain credit unless you make at least $10,000, so everything comes out of pocket. Balancing a full-time job for 8 hours a day with growing a business has been monstrous, but I’ve been doing it for 3 years, and I’m not giving up now.”
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a Registered Nurse with 30 years of experience in various fields, including hospital, ambulatory care, urgent care, management, home health, home infusion, and education. Over the years, I have seen changes in prioritizing patient care. I have witnessed the birth of a child and the passing of an elderly person. I have experienced the sorrow that comes with the loss of parents, friends, and family, enhancing my empathy. As a nurse, I have trained others to become more efficient and pursue higher education to achieve their goals.
My mission is to empower women to become their best selves and help others do the same. We must support each other to build the community we desire and deserve. This is why I created StraightTalk with Sissy. Through my work, I have helped women through challenging situations and watched them overcome obstacles to achieve their goals. Growth is a journey that requires effort, but it is possible.
As a healthcare expert and passionate advocate for women, I offer holistic alternative perspectives that provide a safe space for you to work through pain and disappointment while experiencing self-love and empowerment. I am also here to help you navigate the complex topic of STI diagnosis and help patients understand their discharge instructions from the hospital or doctor’s office. My goal is to remove the fear and hurt around STIs and educate my clients about treatment options and how to move forward with their partners.
Risk-taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
I am taking a leap of faith by creating StraightTalk with Sissy, a platform designed to empower women from a black woman’s perspective. I aim to create a welcoming environment where women feel at ease as if they are chatting with their favorite “homegirl,” not their therapist. As a Self-Love and Sexual Health Coach, I know that discussing sexually transmitted diseases is often considered taboo, especially in the black community. But I believe it’s time for a change. Through StraightTalk with Sissy, I’m taking on the challenge of educating and challenging the medical community to change the way they discuss herpes with patients. It’s a daunting task, but one that’s worth the risk. I’m here to give everything I have to make a difference in the world.
