Today we’d like to introduce you to Edith Gonzalez
Edith, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I started back in 2015, when a friend invited me to work with her. My initial motives were financial stability and adapting to a new country. Specifically, the language and culture because I am an immigrant from Mexico. I moved to this country in order to be alongside my husband. With my co-workers from that time, we hosted multiple services through the Middle Eastern community. Events such as: Bar Mitzvahs, weddings, Ramadan, baby showers, graduations parties, and more. Throughout those years, I learned about traditions and customs from others cultures, which led me to a fascination to continue this job. I went back to college to sharpen my English to offer a better service. I was well known through the community and I decided to start working by my own helping in small events almost every weekend. Clients were sharing my information about my services through the word of mouth. Suddenly, I had a high demand, I was being requested every weekend and some weekdays. I decided to invite more servers to join my team and luckily we have been busy since the pandemic with events including working at the Egyptian embassy, traditional 5 day Indian weddings, Jewish events and other local and private events.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
My biggest struggle was the language and coming to this country not working in my field. I studied Industrial Engineering in Mexico and when I moved to the US, I decided to be a full time mom. This catering job has given me the opportunity to be with my family. Another challenge was being alone with my family since my husband serves in the military and he deploys frequently for months at a time.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
My full time job is working at a high school, I am an assistant and I work with special needs students. On weekends, I work in events and I offer many services such as bartending, cleaning, set up and take down. We know the community and know their necessities and being able to multitask is one of the things that helped me become their trusted and reliable person.
We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
I define success as something every person can achieve in order to feel satisfaction. I am not referring to money, I am talking about enjoying what you do and receiving recognition from people. There are no words to describe when we finish an event and seeing the faces of these families being able to enjoy an important moment of their lives.
