Today we’d like to introduce you to Dominque Ainsworth.
Hi Dominque, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Pink Flex was born from pain and a desperate need for positive distraction. During the time of creating Pink Flex, I was a single mother, caretaking for my mother with Alzheimer’s, and just lost my fiancé. I felt pain taking over and eagerly wanted to defeat depression. I would look at myself in the mirror daily with eyes full of tears and say my daily affirmations. One of those affirmations was flex through the pain “Pink Flex”. (As my nickname is pinky) I also wanted to leave a positive imprint on the world and share my story being a young caregiver to my mother and had an idea of creating a nonprofit called Puzzled Minds. However, I knew to create my nonprofit, I needed profit so I launched Pink Flex first to be the transportation/income source of Puzzled Minds.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
In a short saying, I turned my “beast mode on”; it was not easy for me at all as I was already broken when starting. That alone came with its pros and cons. Pros I felt nothing else could break me more than I was already broken so I wasn’t afraid of fail and took risk. Cons was physically feeling drained. The challenges I faced was learning, I had to shed love ones that was no longer serving me purpose or our goals just simply was no longer aligning. Another challenge was researching, everything was new to me so I had to do a lot of foot work to find out how to even start a business. As my mother who would have been the perfect mentor was too ill with Alzheimers to guide me. Lastly, I struggled in finding balance. I had to self reflect and recognize my flaws, reorganize my life and learn how to juggle all my other responsibilities.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I have two degrees, one in fashion merchandise and one in business management. After college I went into visual merchandising which I loved, however I quickly realized I am not a 9-5 kind of girl. I like to come and go as I please, and I am a people pleaser. Therefore, I like to engage with people and see the confidence I give them when they put on my outfits. I think my energy and personality sets me aside from others. I listen; I’m genuine, understanding, adaptable and very relatable.
We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
One of my most fond memories growing up would be going with my mother to sell numerous different items. My mother has done just about everything you can think of; she had a leather shop, sold crystal house, knives, Avon, Mary Kay…you name it, and I was her little business partner.
