Today we’d like to introduce you to DJ Soulful Desire.

Hi DJ Soulful, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Hi I’m DJ Soulful Desire. I’m a female DJ , Engineer, Producer, and owner of Unique Sounds of Soul Record Label. At a young age I developed a real strong passion for music.My passion was so strong , that I dreamed of owning a Record label at the age of 12 and working in the music industry full time as a career. There are so many people who played a major part in my influence over the years. My influences , included my parents, my family, and church. One of my biggest influencers until this very day is my mother (Sophia Kennedy). Both of my parents, instilled and helped me develop many skills , that would help my brother and I survive in life. However, I really looked up to my mother. My mother was a radio personality for 12 years.I like to refer to her as the Original DJ. I learned a lot from her , being able to travel to concerts and meet main stream artists, mostly in the Gospel industry. I felt inspired each time and wanted to learn more about the music business. During this time, I was also playing instruments and my parents invested in me , by allowing me to take additional music lessons. Now that I look at my success today, I never realized how much those experiences at a young age, shaped me in to the music enthusiast I am today. I’m truly grateful and blessed to have both great parents and a village that helped guide me ,through the success I share today.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Along the way, just like anyone else , there is always challenges. I like to think of challenges, as opportunities to grow, learn, and build resilience.Many look at challenges sometimes as failure. I’m a firm believer there is always a positive in every situation.It’s simply how you find the positive, and use it with the lessons you learn from life experiences. I make sure, I never take advantage of any day , I’m able to wake up and have another opportunity at life, both personally and professionally.Running any type of business , is truly not for the weak. One of the main challenges when starting a business, is maintaining balance.When personal life situations happen, sometimes it can take a toll on you and affect your mindset set and ability to do business.You have to be strong enough and mentally tough, to separate both business and personal. Sometimes it can be merely impossible. I’ve come to learn when those situations occur, to remind myself I’m human. I strive for perfection daily, however I realize no one is perfect and we all are human. It’s truly how you move forward in finding the solutions to improve and make things more calm and simple.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
My current profession is a DJ, Producer, and Record Label Owner. I like to simply think of myself as music visionary and life coach. What sets me aside from many other producers, is the compassion I have for each artist, I work with both musically and personally. I’m a very private person, in my personal life. As a Label Owner and Visionary , I’m totally the opposite. It’s important to know each of my artist , both personally and professionally. We live in a society today, where everything is constantly changing and moving fast.Adapting to constant change has never been an issue , however moving to fast can lead to mistakes. When mistakes, occurs ,you have to take the time to fix them. It’s important as a leader to always move with grace, dignity, and purpose. What sets me aside from others in my profession, is the time , I take to invest in my artist. Investing is not always monetary, it could be helping with other opportunities, training and developing , and seeking out other ways to promote growth. Weekly, I’m checking in with my artists or other artists, I work with to make sure they have everything they need to be successful. I also, make sure I speak with each artists on a personal level. It’s important that I know, each artists is mentally healthy and well outside of creating music, When an artist, is not good personally, and mentally, it impacts their creativity and artistic ability. As much, as I love to speak about music, new songs or projects, I have a strong compassion in making sure all of my artists are personally stable and have all the resources they need. My work and passion for others, is beyond music with in itself.I truly have a big heart and value others well being.

Can you share something surprising about yourself?
What many don’t know , the first time I attended college,I didn’t go for music and business. I studied a whole different major and worked in the field of my major for over 11 years. I never gave up my dream or passion for music. I simply took a major field , that I knew I could be successful in. As contradicting as it sounds, music was always my first choice to major in. I can’t fully blame the thought of doubt and succeeding in the music industry. You have to really put in a lot of work, time, and truly be dedicated in the music profession. I was dedicated , but didn’t have the time to fully invest. I truly lived a full prime life in my 20’s. I also learned and matured a lot through life experiences. There is nothing I regret. Timing is everything. I settled down, in my later 20’s and valued my purpose more.I found my way back to my first Love (Music) and constantly put in so much time and work. It’s definitely challenging coming back at a later age. Establishing and branding my name has definitely been a challenge. You could know everyone in your city personally, but being able to speak , market and connect on a business level can be tough.Especially when you have others , who has been working in the same profession over 10 years or more.There is a whole lot of popularity, competition , and sometimes politics in the business world. I’m only in competition with myself in becoming a better version of myself, both personally and professionally. I always look to network and market with my peers, but take precaution in making sure I remain humble, and still stand out in a different light.
