Life & Work with Diana Hinek

Today we’d like to introduce you to Diana Hinek.

Diana Hinek

Hi Diana, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I started my career as a birth worker out of necessity ( I wanted to spend more time with my children), but also because the birth of my second baby gave me such an insight into the world of midwives and doulas and mothers to mothers. After experiencing a vbac at home (reads vaginal birth after a cesarean), I felt a deep connection with the women who assisted me and supported me in what was one of the best days of my life. I instinctively wanted to give back and make my mission that every single woman who gives birth has the potential to experience such love and compassion, that then translates into her family and community.

I quickly signed up for a doula training offered by the same midwives who assisted my home birth. Soon after, I started to incorporate birth documentary (photo and film) as part of my signature offerings.

I am currently completing a 550 hours energy and bodywork program with IPSB.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
For me, the main struggle is being away from my family for an indefinite time period. I often don’t know when I will be called to a birth and for how long. Life on call makes it hard to plan vacations, holidays and birthdays, but it is such a rewarding and uplifting experience that I would never trade it for a 9-5 job.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
My role as Doula is to guide, support and inspire the families who seek help during the journey of parenting from pregnancy to birth. While I don’t make decisions for my clients, my role is to provide all the knowledge and tools that may allow my clients to make an informed decision about their birth preferences, whether they are birthing at home, hospital or birth center.

Having had personal experiences in all the different scenarios that birth can present (from loss to ceserean birth, to hospital transfer), I am able to relate to my clients on a very compassionate level that sets me apart from other birth workers with less experience.

Providing also documentary services is very dear to my heart because I often find that the memories of birth will fade very soon after the first couple of weeks and the magical experience that is giving birth may be lost not only to us but also to our own children and family.

Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?
Being a birth worker is such a unique profession that most countries don’t value or think necessary. While I wish we could simply rely on the medical professionals attending our birth, I believe the medical system is in need of a big change and until that change happens, I hold onto to the extreme value of birth keepers like myself, who care about mothers and babies and preserving their birthing rights to be safe, empowered and unconditionally loved.
