Life & Work with Deanna Rowland

Today we’d like to introduce you to Deanna Rowland.

Hi Deanna, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I was actually born in Italy because my dad was in the military and stationed there at the time. I’ve moved around a bit and lived in multiple states, but the place where I mostly grew up and call home is Las Vegas. As a child, my parents enrolled me in all the sports and activities they could to keep me busy and between theater summer camps, talent shows, and attending a performing arts middle school for orchestra and dance I developed a love for the arts as a creative outlet and hobby. I earned my bachelor’s degree in criminology and criminal justice with a minor in classical humanities from THE Ohio State University. (Go bucks!) During undergrad, I started working full-time in my career field and signed with a modeling agency and started modeling professionally. I also worked as a promo girl for a NHL team during that time.

I moved to California over three years ago and started off living in San Diego and continued working within my career field. I began modeling and acting again part-time. At the beginning of last year, I decided that I wanted to pursue acting more seriously and to see where it would take me. I spent a lot of time coming to LA within the year and it ended up working out that I actually moved to LA at the end of last year and got an agent last month.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Definitely not a smooth road. There has been a lot of ups and downs while trying to figure everything out. You really have to find a way to ignore all the outside noise and focus on who you are and what you want, and believe that you can accomplish your goals. I spend equally as much time trying to grow as a person as I do trying to develop myself as a creative. I spend a lot of time in my head and can be my own worst critic at times. Understanding that and working on not letting myself get in my own way has been one of my biggest self-projects.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I act and model. TV and film is my favorite, and I also do commercial and music video work in addition to modeling. I’m proud of how far I’ve come and grateful for all of the opportunities I’ve been given. I love the process, being in the middle of the grind, and getting to learn from all of the incredibly talented people I’ve been around.

Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
Network with people on every project you work on. Find people that inspire you and push you to become the best version of yourself.
