Today we’d like to introduce you to Cristina Cotruta
Hi Cristina, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Yes, certainly. My name is Cristina Cotruta, I’m a practicing architectural designer based in Los Angeles. My journey started in Moldova, where I graduated with both a master’s and a bachelor’s degree in architecture. After completing my studies, I had the opportunity to work on a significant national project—the design and construction of a new penitentiary—collaborating with a leading team of Moldovan architects, engineers, and Dutch design and security experts, alongside the Ministry of Justice and the Department of Penitentiary Institutions of Moldova.
As a young graduate eager to expand my knowledge, I began learning about BIM (Building Information Modelling) technologies. I led the design and implementation of a private high school in Moldova. Following its successful completion, I pursued further education at SCI-Arc in Los Angeles, where I deepened my understanding of the built environment. At SCI-Arc I began to discover the digital design realm of architecture and emerging technologies and also during this time I began to specialize, profoundly study and explore Artificial Intelligence and ways to introduce and apply it my direct field of work. This is how my graduate thesis work was born. My thesis investigated AI technologies to uncover a new museological typology, employing ChatGPT 2.0 to create a distinctive building envelope that harmonized the public and private realms, along with the digital and physical dimensions of a museum. At the time, in 2021, AI and NFTs were almost untouched realms and the discoveries of the thesis were significant.
Currently, I am a practicing architectural designer at a reputable firm in Los Angeles, while also running my own design studio. My focus lies in researching and implementing AI and machine learning technologies, utilizing advanced tools such as Stable Diffusion, LoRA training, and MidJourney. I am dedicated to pioneering innovative approaches in architecture, striving to deliver exceptional solutions and value to my clients.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The journey has certainly had its challenges. While I’ve experienced rewarding moments and achievements, there were significant obstacles along the way. One of the primary struggles was navigating the complexities of multidisciplinary collaboration on large-scale projects. Coordinating different perspectives and expertise required effective communication and adaptability, which were initially daunting.
Additionally, transitioning from traditional architectural practices to embracing BIM technologies and digital tools presented a steep learning curve. It took time to build the necessary skills and confidence to lead projects effectively in this new landscape. And to be honest, I’m still learning and researching. We are just at the beginning and these are initial steps into the unknown. But they have to be made!
Studying abroad at SCI-Arc also came with its own set of challenges, from adapting to a different educational environment to managing the demands of a rigorous curriculum. However, these experiences ultimately shaped my resilience and adaptability, allowing me to grow both personally and professionally. Each struggle has been an opportunity for learning, pushing me to innovate and find creative solutions in my work.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
As mentioned before, in my current role as an architectural designer, I specialize in integrating advanced digital design tools and technologies into the architectural process. My research and work explores AI and machine learning to enhance design efficiency and innovation. But also to bring about change and economic benefits to the built environment as a whole.
What I believe sets me apart from others is my commitment to continuous learning and adaptation. This forward-thinking approach enables me to offer innovative solutions that address the evolving needs of clients and the industry, which is crucial in today’s modern society.
I think I’m most proud of my resilience but of course, I’m proud about my work and the results I get. It’s not easy but it’s extremely rewarding to know you are part of a bigger scope, you are a piece that leads to change and innovation.
Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
Absolutely, I owe much of my success to a number of mentors, supporters, and teammates who have played crucial roles along the way. My professors at SCI-Arc whose insights into emerging technologies and innovative design practices greatly influenced my approach to architecture and helped shape my current focus on AI integration.
I also want to acknowledge my colleagues from the multidisciplinary team I worked with on the penitentiary project back in Moldova. Their diverse expertise—ranging from security engineering to architectural design—enriched my understanding of collaborative design processes. Working alongside such talented individuals taught me the importance of communication and teamwork in achieving a common goal.
Additionally, my clients have been instrumental in my growth. Their trust in my vision and willingness to explore innovative ideas have motivated me to push my own boundaries and seek out new solutions.
Lastly, I’ve been fortunate to have a strong support system of friends and family who have encouraged me during challenging times, reminding me of my goals and passions. Their belief in my abilities has been a constant source of motivation.
Overall, I believe that success is rarely a solo endeavor; it’s the result of collaborative efforts and the support of those around you. I am deeply grateful for the roles each of these individuals has played in my journey.
