Today we’d like to introduce you to Clover Li.
Hi Clover, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Art has always been a special part of my life, but it wasn’t until I grew older that I truly realized its significance to me. I discovered that art had a unique power to bring tranquility amidst the complexities of the real world. It became a means for me to express emotions and thoughts that were otherwise difficult to convey. Art became a window through which I could radiate light and hope and a channel to connect with others. And illustration spoke to me the most as a visual language. My journey into the world of illustration began when I was exploring different art forms, and I found Oliver Jeffers’s children’s book, ‘Lost and Found.’ The way illustrations connected with both children and adults, combining naivety and sophistication, fascinated me. They could capture the essence of something as simple as a cup of tea while also conveying profound metaphors. This experience made it clear to me that illustration was the path I wanted to pursue.
I started practicing Chinese calligraphy since six years old. This practice helped me understand the rhythm and mood expressed through lines and shapes. Even as a child, I was fond of doodling, leaving different marks on textbooks, desks, and every available surface. In high school, I explored various mediums, including painting, printing, art installations, and even fashion design, using recycled materials.
During my time at the Fashion Institute of Technology, I had the opportunity to further develop my illustration skillsets. The guidance and support of talented educators played a crucial role in honing my abilities and shaping my unique artistic language. Through my studies, I also gained a broader understanding of the field and I came to realize the immense power images possess in conveying messages and emotions.
What truly brings me joy and fulfillment is when my audience feels touched or uplifted by my work, even if only for a brief moment. One of my main motivations in pursuing this career is to provide a space for people to unleash their thoughts and imagination or find solace and happiness. It is an incredible honor to have the ability to offer such moments of freedom and joy through my illustrations.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
My illustrator road has been filled with both ups and downs. Some of the challenges I faced were from limitations with my craft techniques, hindering my ability to bring my ideas to life in a truly splendid and unique manner. However, these obstacles can be overcome by continuously exploring new visual directions and techniques, seeking constructive feedback from peers to improve, or even accepting the current limitations while focusing on honing my skills for future projects. Yet, the most daunting struggles I’ve encountered lie within myself – battling inner insecurities, doubts, and a sense of meaninglessness. Trusting oneself can be incredibly difficult, especially when our careers don’t always align with our dreams. That’s why I am immensely grateful for the unwavering support I’ve received from my friends, family, and even strangers. Their kind words, support, and encouragement mean the world to me, providing the strength to persevere.
Ultimately, what truly matters is the work we invest in our own craft, ideas, and mindset. I strive to continuously push my capabilities, working on subjects that genuinely resonate with my interests and sharing kind messages through my art. By staying true to myself and persevering through challenges, I aim to make a positive impact through my creative endeavors.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
With over a decade of experience, I constantly explore and expand my artistic subject range. My work is characterized by a sense of naivety, dreamy yet vibrant color palettes, and careful depictions of characters’ emotions and atmospheres. I have a deep love for nature, culture and animals, which often find their way into my illustrations. One aspect that sets my work apart is my incorporation of brush strokes or watercolor blends, even in digital pieces. This technique adds warmth to the digital medium while maintaining the splendid visual effects achieved in digital platforms. Beyond the technical aspects, I am passionate about creating works that advocate for empathy, cross-cultural understanding, and cultural identities. Nature, animals, life, and drama/literature serve as significant inspirations for me, as they have instilled a love for this world, and I strive to share that joy with my audience.
One project I am particularly proud of is my visual thesis project at FIT, where I created a children’s book titled ‘The Story of the Doggo Prince.’ This heartwarming tale follows the doggo prince as he ventures beyond his home kingdom, challenging his misconceptions about other animals. Through overcoming fear and prejudice, he discovers unexpected treasures. This project was honored with the New Talent Merit by the ijungle Illustration Award and was shortlisted by Hiii Illustration 2021. The recognition and impact of this project bring me immense pride.
Overall, my work showcases my dedication to capturing emotions, promoting empathy, and celebrating the beauty of our world through illustrations that blend technical excellence with heartfelt storytelling.
Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
I am incredibly blessed to have a family that has been my unwavering source of support and love. They are the foundation on which I stand, and I owe them everything. Though none of them pursue art professionally, their belief in me and their willingness to go above and beyond have put wings on my dreams. Within the nurturing community of the Illustration MFA program at FIT, I have been fortunate enough to find mentors who have shaped me in profound ways. Brendan Leach, the department head, has not only offered sage advice but has truly understood and embraced the artistic vision I hold dear. Hyesu Lee, a brilliant artist and educator, has inspired me to fearlessly explore the realms of playfulness and experimentation, unlocking new depths of creativity within me. Richard Borge, with his relentless pursuit of excellence, has pushed me beyond my comfort zones, helping me refine my design sensibility and guiding me toward better work. Lauren Berke, with her unwavering belief in my unique voice, has encouraged me to unleash my authenticity onto the canvas. And let’s not forget my incredible classmates and other instructors, whose invaluable critiques and feedback have shaped me into the artist I am today.
To myself, I say with a heart full of pride that I have pushed beyond the boundaries and confronted every hurdle with unwavering determination. I have never settled for mediocrity and have always strived to surpass my own expectations. The difficulties I have faced along this art-pursuing journey have only made me stronger and more resilient.
Lastly, I want to pour my gratitude and love onto my partner, Eric Qu. He has been my rock, my first audience, and my unwavering pillar of support. His belief in me has fueled my creative fire, and his whole-hearted support has been the foundation of my artistic endeavors. Every little character and detail in my work carries a whisper of love and appreciation for him.
