Life & Work with Christina Baldwin of Lake Forest

Today we’d like to introduce you to Christina Baldwin

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
We’ve been playing together for over 20 years, but we’ve changed directions a few times. Christina auditioned as the vocalist for a band Bruce was playing drums in. When that band started falling apart, they started a project together as a duo, called “Ascent,” with Bruce on guitar. and Christina on vocals. After performing for a long time as just guitar and vocal, Bruce realized he could create the sound of full band onstage through the power of live looping. We’ve recorded several albums together and played hundreds of live shows. As our recordings got “heavier” and louder so did our live shows. When we realized we needed a more unique identity online, we shortened our name to ASNT.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It’s never a smooth road! Because it was so hard to find and keep our band members who shared our vision and commitment, we became a duo. Some promoters, and even audience members, are suspicious of a rock band with only two members. They imagine we will sound small. We win them over with our live sound and performance when we play. We don’t use backing tracks or anything prerecorded, but we use technology to create the song from the ground up when we perform.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
We have day jobs, but our minds are on our music!
Christina is a Corporate Training Director. She can hold the attention of corporate executives and a rock audience.

Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
You have to develop your musical abilities, including your ability to write music, sing, or play an instrument through constant practice. Play every day. Don’t spend time trying to sound exactly like someone else. Listen to the sound in your head and create that. Don’t limit yourself by defining your music in terms of a genre. Don’t listen to others who want you to change or put you in a box. Don’t let the naysayers get in your head. Present yourself as a big deal, even when you’re not, and go for it.
