Life & Work with Chloe Kern of Orange County, CA

Today we’d like to introduce you to Chloe Kern.

Hi Chloe, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Growing up, I was always experimenting with my parents’ cameras, phones, and Polaroids — but my real passion for photography began in sixth grade when I enrolled in a photography elective. I bought my first DSLR camera soon after and continued doing photoshoots for fun all throughout high school. When it came time for college, I decided to pursue photography as a career and earned my BFA from California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo. Although Cal Poly isn’t an art school, I was able to enjoy a traditional college experience while majoring in Art and Design with a Photo/Video Concentration. After completing my undergraduate degree, I became increasingly drawn to editorial and fashion photography. In 2024, I moved to France to pursue a Master’s in Fashion Film and Photography at the Paris College of Art, where I recently graduated this past May. Since returning to Southern California, I’ve been shooting regularly and am currently seeking photography opportunities in the area!

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Certaintly not. Because I feel as if I am still establishing myself as a professional photographer, I am constantly doubting myself and wondering if I can truly make it as a photographer. Luckily, both of my parents are creatives and are very supportive of me and my career.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I would describe myself as a fashion photographer and videographer specializing in editorial photography and creative films. I am known for my playful and exaggerated scenes — utilizing lighting, set design, and styling to bring the viewer into my realm. I am most proud of my “Modern Woman” self portrait series and “Icarus Reimagined” photo/video graduate project.

Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
Although I consider myself very lucky in terms of privilege and opportunity, I am still seeking out some good luck to help guide me within my photography career. Since this industry is mainly about who know you, I believe luck truly plays a large part in being successful in the industry, along with talent.
