Life & Work with Cathleen Cleveland of East Village Arts District

Today we’d like to introduce you to Cathleen Cleveland

Hi Cathleen, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
2007 i started this business because of my own skin issues and sensitivity. At this time there was no natural products on the shelves at grocery stores so I had to resort to making my own. My exposure grew to where I had my products in mom and pops stores and grocery stores.
Today post covid 13 things have changed a lot. People are shopping more on line or are be specific on what they get when they go out due to budgets. Foot traffic is pretty much non existent. This causing hardship on my customer base as well as people not staying to live in Long Beach. I have had to go through and research everything all over again and start with a brand new business plan. Since I have done this I have landed 6 major contracts, 3 magazine interviews, and 3 collaborations. We are building a new website that will be more user friendly. Our logo has also been update. Now we are planning for a busy holiday season including adding new categories of soap including a nut free collection. We are also customizing a lot of orders now.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
No absolutely not. Right now we are basically having to start all over. We have learned a lot about previous mistakes that were made

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
My soaps are my creativity. I can create to my hearts content. I have several collections. We offer our tea spectral soaps, nut free soaps, coconut soaps, vegan etc.

In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
Big shifts for improvement, growth, and expansion.

  • 4 bars of vegan or goats milk soaps are $25.
  • Nut Free is 4 for $35
