Life & Work with Borna Moinpour

Today we’d like to introduce you to Borna Moinpour.

Borna Moinpour

Hi Borna, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I was born and raised in a big family in Tehran, Iran. My grandparent’s house was the hub for us, and still now, every time I have a dream about my family and Iran, it takes place in that house and its double-story backyard. As I got older, the family got smaller, and they finally sold the house. From then, I decided to become an architect to somehow rebuild that house. I moved to San Francisco in 2018, and after seven years of studying and practicing architecture, I realized that it was about those stories and memories that took place inside the house and not the surrounding concrete walls. In 2021, I got into the Film and Television Production MFA program at USC to study film.

Having been surrounded by the warmest sound community in SCA, I got interested in recording and designing Sound for the motion picture. And now that I look back, I’m so happy to have taken that leap of faith, being surrounded by the most beautiful people I can call my friends and family.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It definitely wasn’t a smooth one. After all, I like the road bumpy! Every struggle gives me the chance to learn from it and appreciate the life I’m living. Everything was new for me when I transitioned into film. New country, new industry, new people. SCA helped a lot in smoothing the transition. I’ll think again when I graduate!

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
As an extreme introvert, everything I do is to express my emotions. I won’t talk if I don’t want to! Most of the works I create are related to something that I miss from my childhood. Maybe it’s a dream that I had when I was six or about someone I had met in the school and have forgotten about. It’s not necessarily a nostalgic sensation, but could be something that I’ve never witnessed before, but it feels right. I always love the idea of coincidental encounters. I never knew why I met my close friends it just felt right at the moment, and I kept feeding it to make it keep feeling right.

Any big plans?
I never imagined that I would end up in the sound world. I would like to keep going deeper and explore it more and more. Recording production sound gives me such relieving feeling, always present at the moment, listening. Same for the post-production sound design and mixing. I love witnessing finishing a product; unlike architecture, where I never got the chance to experience the finished product!
