Life & Work with Betania Murillo of Los Angeles

Today we’d like to introduce you to Betania Murillo

Hi Betania, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
When I was around 5 years old my family and I were staying at a hotel that was also hosting a casting call for child actors. Not knowing anything about the entertainment industry, but very curious, my siblings and I decided to give it a shot. We got scouted that day and I quickly fell in love with filmmaking. I spent most of my childhood in acting classes but soon realized my passion for directing. In college, I studied cinematic arts and started to experience just how intense and competitive filmmaking can be.

As I got older I worked on set more, did a few internships, volunteered at film festivals, and continued to study film even outside of class. However, the lack of Latino representation was at the forefront of my mind and the first thing I noticed in every room I walked in. I knew I wanted to work with Latino creators and showcase our culture in every project I could. When I graduated college, my dad, who is also passionate about Latinos in film, started the platform “Chicano Hollywood.”

About three years later, this platform which started as a family business, quickly took on a life of its own and easily turned into my dream job. Now I get to produce projects, coordinate training workshops, and creative direct content, all while spotlighting Latino talent. I’m consistently inspired by the community we’ve created and thank God for the work I get to do.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Working in this industry is far from easy, it’s inconsistent, there’s a lot of rejection, and financially very difficult. I definitely couldn’t survive without my faith in Jesus and praying through every hard decision. However, because there are so many obstacles, you have to constantly remind yourself why you love what you do. So yes there are moments that will make you want to quit, but there are also countless moments that make you fall in love with this art form all over again. As long as you know that you gave every project your all and never downplay what you bring to the table, then you’ll be just fine.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m a creative director and producer for short-form content and events. I’m obsessed with music content and love directing music videos. I’ve always set out to make coming-of-age films but right now I think what sets me apart is bringing the elements I love about that genre into everything I create.

Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
If you are a Latino creator I encourage you to get involved with Chicano Hollywood! The community is so special and full of collaborative opportunities.
