Life & Work with Ashlin Teague of Hawthorne

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ashlin Teague

Hi Ashlin , can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
As cliché as it sounds, I’ve always known I wanted to be an actor. My interest in this career started off with me reciting different movie scenes in the shower as a kid that I truly believed were Oscar-worthy. No one has seen better range in my acting abilities than those tiled walls. I was completely enthralled with the idea that one person could be multiple characters who lived vastly different lives and had such distinct experiences within the world. At one point in time I became so hyper-fixated on characters that I accidentally practiced Method acting without knowing what it was. That’s right. I was 12-years-old walking around in my mothers trench coat and leather purse, holding an umbrella, whilst reciting in a poor English accent that “a spoon full of sugar helps the medicine go down” and that “I am practically perfect in every way”. My parents really should’ve taken away my TV at that point.

Fast forward to high school, I audition for my local magnet arts school, Carver Center for the Arts, in Towson, MD. I really owe this school so much credit as I would not be the person or actor that I am today without it. It was here that I was able to build confidence in not only myself but my abilities as an actor. My wonderful teachers navigated me through scene study, styles, vocal and movement technique, and so many more critical skills for this industry. At the end of my high school journey, I booked a modeling job through a local boutique in Baltimore which landed me my first ever agent!

I continued to act (both in the industry and in the shower) after high school. I picked up a local background gig for an Apple Tv+ mini series called “Lady in the Lake”. Everyday I would walk on set and feel what I can only describe as a “high”. Being on set, in costume, and in character just energized me like no other. One day I walk onto base camp and was told that the director, Alma Ha’rel, wrote me into the show the night before. To say that day was a whirlwind of shock, excitement, and nausea is an understatement. I got to do my very first professional scene alongside Natalie Portman and Pruitt Taylor Vince. I stayed behind the scenes as a stand-in for the rest of that show and was just beyond grateful everyday.

Flash forward to now, I am living in LA to pursue both my acting and modeling career. I have picked up roles in sitcoms, feature films, and even hand-modeling gigs. I signed with an agency out here for print and commercial but am still on the hunt for tv and film management. I’m incredibly grateful for the career I’ve had so far. I guess I’m still holding out for a Mary Poppins audition though.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Every obstacle I have faced while pursuing my career has taught me incredibly valuable lessons. I feel very grateful for all of the opportunities I’ve had in the past. It’s never easy being in a profession where you are constantly opening yourself up for judgement. However, the vulnerability of this job is what makes it so special to me. It can be pretty uncomfortable being vulnerable, but no one ever grows by staying in their comfort zone. Every time I finish playing a character, I know I’ve grown more as not only an actor but as a person as well. And isn’t that the goal in life? To constantly evolve into a better version of yourself?

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Well, I am an actor and a model! I love this industry and what it has to offer but there are some aspects that I am hoping to change through my own actions. In such a competitive environment, it becomes easy to internalize the “eat or be eaten mentality”. One may feel as though they have to put someone down in order to gain the upper-hand when they are pitted against each other. I, on the other hand, am a firm believer that what you put out into the universe will eventually come back to you. I believe what sets me apart from others is that I want to be a cheerleader for other’s successes. I think everyone has redeeming qualities and deserves to be treated with kindness and respect. It’s important to me that everyone on set whether they are an actor, a PA, crafty services, etc. feels appreciated and valuable. Creating a film is a team effort, therefore I am happy to be a team player.
