Life & Work with Anna-katharina Vasak of Los Angeles

Today we’d like to introduce you to Anna-katharina Vasak

Anna-Katharina, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I am originally from Austria and always dreamed of working in the entertainment industry. I used to act in theater productions and wanted to act. So, when I was 22, I moved to Los Angeles and went to college for Film, – and TV because I wanted to learn more about production and how a film was made. I grew to learn producing and as I got more experience on sets, I loved working as a 2nd AD. I have made many connections working on different sets and attending various networking events, and it’s great to know so many people working in film and TV. It wasn’t always easy, and it still isn’t easy, but you just have to keep going. I was grateful to also work as an intern at a production company to learn more about the pre-production side and being an assistant to a producer/director.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I came to the US during a tough time. First the COVID shutdown happened, and then there were the strikes. That being said, production went down a lot and it is hard to find a job. I made a lot of connections with other students and worked on many student films and was also able to get in contact with producers in the industry and help them out on sets as a PA. It is still hard right now, to find work, especially because I am in the beginning of my career, however I hope it all comes back again.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am very proud of myself for having built such a connection and meeting so many people in the industry that I can work with. I came here knowing nobody, and I usually am not the person that just talks and connects with people. However, I jumped over my own shadow and made it happen. I work as an actress, but also work in production. As of right now, I do a lot of 2nd AD work, and I enjoy it. Moving forward, I would like to expand my knowledge in producing and start acting more. I think what sets me apart from a lot of people I worked with, is that I can stay calm in stressful situations and still do my work. It can be very stressful during shooting, however,I find it to be more effective to keep on track and not let it consume you.

Who else deserves credit in your story?
I really want to thank my parents, because without them all of this wouldn’t be possible. They supported me so much through the years and still continue to do so. It’s hard to live in Los Angeles, but my parents support me financially when needed, but also mentally – it was hard for them in the beginning to see me go, but I can see how they are proud of me now.
