Life & Work with Amia Serrano of Beverly Hills

Today we’d like to introduce you to Amia Serrano

Hi Amia, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
First, I literally Googled ‘how to become a wardrobe stylist’ and at the beginning of my career as a stylist I was working a full-time job for the Department of Justice. As I started to build my portfolio, I’d use my vacation/sick leave and then take leave without pay when those hours ran out just so I can take on styling projects during the week or try and style some on the weekends when I was off of work. These projects weren’t paid either. I even interned for a stylist I had found on Craigslist, which was also for free, but mainly for the experience.

Eventually, I got contacted on LinkedIn by a tv producer to style their tv host that was paid and, of course, I took it. I then started getting so busy with the show and my schedule becoming more sporadic with multiple shoot days every week. It got to a point where I had to either resign from my full-time job or go part-time and show up on days I’m supposed to be there. I decided to resign. I’ve been freelancing ever since.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Not at all. Even up until this day. Struggles along the way for me have mostly been financial: owing taxes at the end of the year, needing to find work all the time, budgeting personal finances so I don’t go broke (which happened multiple times), responsibility of paying for things that get lost or stolen while in my care for projects, etc. It’s been a continued learning experience going through different seasons as a stylist for sure.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I style brand campaigns, editorials, music videos, celebrity press/red carpet, commercials, and dabble in personal styling too.

As of the new year, I started a YouTube channel to help aspiring stylists by sharing ‘What’s in my kit?’ and answering ‘How Do I..?’ questions regarding styling. I have an Amazon storefront that has everything and similar to what I share in my kit linked on there for convenience to those interested in buying items for themselves. I did all of this because not only do I get these questions asked a lot, but I didn’t get the help I needed when I first became a stylist. A lot of it was self-taught and learned along the way, so now I want to help others with that – no gatekeeping either!

What makes you happy?
My relationship with my Lord and savior Jesus Christ because He’s given me this talent/gift, the opportunities, the network, provision, community, wisdom, healing, peace, strength – everything I need to persevere in this world and not just with styling. I could not do life without him. God is awesome and He is REAL.
