Life & Work with Amahd Bey of North Hollywood

Today we’d like to introduce you to Amahd Bey

Hi Amahd, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I’m technically from Lancaster, but I used to stay with my great grandparents when I was younger in Rosamond.. My great grandmother, would watch me most of the time, and she was an avid reader.. She was always be in the library, and would always urge me to get a few books to read at home. One of the times, I found Tupac’s “A Rose That Grew From the Concrete”. I didn’t know it then, but that book became one of the reasons I create. I had already knew and liked his music but that changed my perspective from music being music, to music being art. I learned the history of hip hop the culture, and that was a huge inspiration to consciously know who I am and what I feel. It wasn’t until my freshman year of high school that I wrote my first poem. My English teacher, Mr. Titlon, was dope, and was a huge admirer of good literature. He gave me such high praise and urged me to keep writing that that had always stuck with me. Mind you, I had such a high respect for MC.s, lyricist, poets, etc, that I would never try cause I didn’t think I was good enough. By the time I went off to college, I was looking to create myself and figure out what I wanted to do with my life. The only thing that spoke to me, was writing. I started free writing everyday and taking up different writing opportunities around campus. Though I enjoyed all of them, the one that made me the most fulfilled was all of the creative writing roles. Whole time, I would always journal, or write small poems or rhymes throughout the day just for fun, or to vent without needing to talk about it. Cause you know, some things just aren’t that deep. But after taking those classes, and some deep thought and reflection, I decided that being a writer, was who I knew I wanted to be, and I’ll be happy making a living off of any form. Then, covid hit my junior year in college, and I was looking for a way to make life make sense, and I decided I was going to embrace who I was, and out myself out there as such. I had already wrote well over 200 poems so I compiled a little over 90 poems into a book and self published it. Then I did the same thing a few years later, compiling my second book the year I graduated. Over the years I’ve worked on various projects involving screenwriting, journalism, music and poetry. I am publishing my third book soon, and am excited to share my growth as a creative and writer

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The biggest obstacles were myself and covid. Covid stopped a lot of things that I initially had planned, such as internships, job opportunities, etc. Mentally, and physically, I was not in a place where I can afford to sit still or be stagnant. Creating a book allowed me to express myself, connect with people and serves as a tangible representation of being able to turn what I think into fruition.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a writer. I write poetry, scripts, blogs, and music. I am more known to write poetry than all else. I am very proud of my ability to tell stories and experiences
