Today we’d like to introduce you to Alex Brenes.
Hi Alex, so excited to have you on the platform. So, before we get into questions about your work life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
My name is Alex Brenes; I am a retired professional boxer from Costa Rica. I started my career as an amateur fighter at 14 years old. After 9 years of amateur boxing, turned professional in Miami, Florida. After 12 years as a professional, training under some of the best trainers in the sport, such as Luis Lagerman, I evolved into a boxing gym owner, a natural progression of someone who is passionate about his craft. I currently own & operate, with my wife, City of Angels Boxing. We opened in November 2012 and were forced to close due to COVID in 2020 and recently reopened in December 2022.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It’s been everything but smooth, but it has been fun! As a fighter, if it’s not challenging, it’s not fun, and I have the best people in my corner: my friends and my family! COVID, as it was for many people around the world, was extremely hard for our industry but like a fighter, we overcame the obstacles and have come out triumphant.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar with what you do, what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a former professional boxer, and I am passionate about teaching everything that I’ve learned to individuals who love boxing and fitness in general. I would say that what sets City of Angels Boxing apart from others is that this is pure boxing for regular people. What makes me proud is to be able to teach proper boxing form, conditioning, etc., to people that otherwise would never have experienced this type of discipline.
Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
Never tell an individual that they cannot be a fighter.
