Today we’d like to introduce you to Tine Ernholdt.
Hi Tine, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I grew up in a very musically interested and talented family so music has always been a very big part of my life. One of my favourite things to do as a kid was to go through my parent’s LP collection and decide what we should listen to. When I was a kid, I sang in a lot of different choirs and I took piano and vocal lessons. I always had a secret dream of becoming a singer and performer, however I was very shy so it took me years to actually perform solo in front of any kind of audience. In high school, I studied economy but I remember always being a bit jealous of my friends who studied arts and got to sing all day long in school. After I graduated, I decided that I should become a psychologist and I put my singing dreams aside for a couple of years.
After working as a psychologist for a couple of years, I decided that I had nothing to lose and I applied for a one year vocal program at Kulturama, an art school in Stockholm, and I loved every minute of it. To constantly sing, perform and be surrounded by so much creativity was amazing. After I finished the first year, my initial plan was to apply for another year at the same school. However, with a lot of encouragement from my vocal teacher Daniel, I decided to move to Los Angeles to attend Musicians Institute instead. I attended a program in vocal performance for a year and I learned a lot and grew both as a vocalist and as a songwriter. I have now lived in Los Angeles for over two years and I am writing and recording as a solo artist. During 2020, I released my first single “Darkside” and “Addiction” under my artist name “Tine”.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I don’t think you can find any artist, musician or performer who will tell you that it has been a smooth road. I have always been very critical of what I do and I want everything to be perfect so for me, one of the biggest things I had to learn is to take risks and just start writing, performing, etc. even though I’m not sure if it’s going to be perfect. With my own music, I think the biggest struggle is to find ways to make my songs reach potential listeners. It doesn’t matter if I write a great song if no one ever has a chance to hear it so you have to put in a lot of work in promoting your music.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Initially, I was mostly interested in being a vocalist and I would almost exclusively sing covers. The last year I have been more geared towards songwriting which is now my biggest passion. I write and record as a solo artist and released my first singles “Darkside” and “Addiction” in 2020 and I am currently working with my producer on my upcoming songs that will drop in the beginning of 2021. I am constantly looking for inspiration and I record every melody line that pops into my head and I have hundreds of notes in my phone with words and phrases that I like. I seem to write my best stuff when I am feeling a bit low which translates into my songs. For me, the lyric is very important and I have a flair for combining emotional lyrics with catchy melodies. Genre wise I call it dark pop. Every now and then, I also sing back-up vocals for other artists, mostly because it’s fun to be a part of someone else project and also because it’s a great way to improve your ear training.
Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
When I moved to Los Angeles and started Musicians Institute, I had very little knowledge about music theory and ear training and one app that has been very helpful is “Tenuto” where they have customizable exercises for almost all levels. I recommend that app to everyone who wants to improve their skills in those subjects.
