Today we’d like to introduce you to Kevin Kobrine.
Hi Kevin, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I have been making music just over four years now. It started off my sophomore year of high school at Corona Del Mar. I always had an interest in music and art and eventually invested my time into listening to full albums to understand the artist’s creative mind. A close friend of mine at a similar time began making beats for fun. Later that year, we would make music after school in addition on the weekends together. After four months, I started doing it on my own. For two years of my artistic career, I was strictly a musical producer. I focused on crafting instrumentals, understanding the software the sound production and taught myself basic music theory. By my freshman year at UCLA, I had an archive of hundreds of beats. I had a fundamental problem. I had beats but I did not have any songs. I started off rapping for about a year but in order to separate myself and make the music, I truly wanted to make I knew I needed to do vocal training.
Over a year straight, all I did was sing and do dynamic vocal training exercises. This consistent hard work would eventually help me create my own identity. I have no God-given musical talent, five years ago I had not a single clue of how music was made let alone make my own music. I have had an unfazed loyalty to my musical journey, I found something I was extremely passionate about, despite having zero knowledge and expertise in it, I began working and working. Four years later, I have my own home studio, where I produce, mix, master, record, and compose my own melodic R&B tracks. I released my first song November 20th, called “What’s Up.”
Athletics has been a staple in my life ever since I could remember. I grew up playing basketball, baseball and soccer. Despite volleyball being the last sport I picked up, it did not affect my success early on. My senior year of high school, I was ranked the number 2 recruit in my class. In addition, I was Orange Country volleyball player of the year and Orange County Outstanding competitor. I lead my high school team to two CIF championships and in 2018 a national title. In club volleyball, I was on a historic 949 volleyball team, the first team to win four consecutive gold medals in all four high school age groups. (15,16,17,18) I was listed on the All-Tournament team all four years and MVP of the tournament my 16s year. I am currently on the UCLA Men’s volleyball team, but my athletic goals do not stop there. The summer of 2019, I was on CABC a basketball team that participates in the renowned Drew League. I was injured at the time of the season but my team went up against guys such as Lamelo Ball, Shareef O’neal and Tray Young.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Music – The hardest thing for me is, due to my unique sound having the confidence in my artistic idea.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
What sets me apart from other artists is that my songs are philosophical and have double even triple entendre about some of the most complex and trivial things in our lives. Also, my unique diverse voice, having the ability to sing high then rap deep instantly after adds another dimension to my vocal range and music that most other artists are not capable of doing.
We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
I suffered from an extremely painful autoimmune disease my freshman year at UCLA. I was extremely uncomfortable and painful. It affected my skin, joints and rib cage alignment. I was almost unable to walk for the majority of the 2019 summer. This illness lasted over a year and it has left its mark on me. A result of this debilitating illness was 30 or 40 scars and indentations on my chest, shoulders and back. This pain I suffered is one of my biggest motivations for my music.
