Life & Work with Kaitlyn Quitiquit

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kaitlyn Quitiquit.

Hi Kaitlyn, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I’ve had a passion for art and being creative for as long as I can remember. It really began when I would constantly draw the Powerpuff Girls as I’d watch them on Cartoon Network. I fell in love with drawing, it came so naturally to me. It wasn’t until my first few years of grade school that fully realized I was actually… kinda good at it. My love for art grew throughout the years and I had always dreamed of fulfilling a career in the creative field, but there was always a thought in the back of my mind that it would be such a privilege to be an artist and that I would have to be crazy good to “make it”. It felt like I was sort of hiding myself and all my passion under a blanket, but I never really had a reason to. I knew deep in my heart that I was meant to do something creative, but I thought I would never have the courage to do so. Nursing it is — or so I thought. In high school, I was involved in almost every visual + performing arts extra-curricular activity that was offered. I could say I had definitely learned more about myself within those years, not only as a person but as a creative.

When senior year came around, it felt like I hit a hiccup in my life, like most teenagers. I had no clue what I wanted to major in and where I would go in my career. I was torn between the idea of making money or doing something I love and am genuinely passionate about. Because I thought architecture is somewhat a balance of both, I ended up applying to schools as an architecture major all over California but I didn’t get accepted to any of my dream schools. My last resort was to apply to The Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising in Downtown for Interior Design, a school I initially did not want to go to at all. Little did I know I would meet lifelong friends and learn skills extremely crucial for my career today. After receiving my Associate of Arts Degree in 2018, I began working for high-end interior design companies around Los Angeles, and I couldn’t be happier. I just know my younger self would not believe it if she saw where I am today, she’d be so proud, haha.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Definitely. There have been times where I’ve doubted myself and thought I was very useless since I can’t really make that big of a difference in someone’s life, compared to how a doctor or a lawyer could. But I think the thing that keeps me going is the fact that I do love what I do, and it does make me happy. I don’t know what I’d be doing if I wasn’t in the creative field, it’s impossible for me to visualize.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am an Interior Designer and Digital Artist for a Creative Firm called You’re Safe Here and the Creative Director of a full-service design company that I run with my boyfriend called PROTOQIT. I mainly specialize in 3D Modeling and Renderings for Interior Design, and I do offer Graphic Design services as well. I am most proud of my work ethic and how I am constantly striving to do better when it comes to my work. I think what sets me apart from other designers in my field is that although I am younger than most interior designers around Los Angeles, that does give me an advantage because I am very tech-savvy (especially with the newest technological advances in this day and age) and I can bring a new and fresh perspective when it comes to design.

What does success mean to you?
Success to me is being able to do something you are genuinely passionate about and to be able to support yourself off of that. When you do something you love, it doesn’t feel like work at all.
