Life & Work with JD Dominguez

Today we’d like to introduce you to JD Dominguez.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I’ve gotten to where I am today by believing in myself, being stubbornly persistent, and surrendering to whatever opportunities the universe presents me with. Knowing that whatever those opportunities are there is something to gain.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
It hasn’t been a smooth road. Pre-Covid I felt like I finally had a breakthrough in my creative career. After years of being a freelance photographer and 1st Assistant Director, I finally broke into directing scripted narratives (16 webisodes and one feature). Then covid hit and put a halt in my momentum. In the early stages of lockdown, I was resentful of the circumstances, but then I found peace in nature. All I did all summer was go camping because it felt like the only thing one could do besides staying locked in at home. Being in nature gave me the space to reflect on my work/life, as well as help me figure out how I wanted to nurture my inner creative. I’ve focused on writing and photography since they both don’t require that many bodies. Writing helps me get unsettled energy out, stories I want to share out, and it brings a sense of hope and something to look forward to. Photography helps me with the physical part of being creative, whether it’s shooting a landscape when I’m camping or shooting someone’s portrait.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m a Latinx non-binary creative. I am a film director and a photographer. Currently, I’ve been doing more photography than film directing. I mostly do portraiture. Ultimately I would love to continue my path as a film director. I’m most known for directing scripted web series on youtube. Cumulatively I have over 10 million views on all my work. I’m most proud of directing episode 2 of a show called “Crazy Fast.” In the episode one of the main characters is transgender and comes out to a fellow classmate. As a queer person, I’m proud of making something that I wish I had when I was younger. What sets me apart from others is my ability to be non-judgmental, relatable, and emotionally aware. I’m able to meet people where they’re at. I’ve worked with a lot of children, teens, and adults, and I like to think I’m good at finding a way to communicate in a way that they will understand and find a way to bring out what is emotionally needed for scenes.

Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
You don’t have to be one thing. Being creative is being many things.
