Life & Work with Denise Madrigal

Today we’d like to introduce you to Denise Madrigal.

Hi Denise, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Growing up, I had three sisters, two older and one younger. I’d always play around with them and of course, I wanted to do their “hair and makeup”. So naturally, that’s where my passion started. When I got to high school, I was heavily involved in my school’s theater program and dedicated my time in doing hair and makeup for productions. That’s where I really fell in love with all things beauty! I grew up in a home where school was very important, my siblings and I are first-generation Mexican-American. Not going to college wasn’t an option and my parents made that very clear to us. After a year of GE classes, I found myself so unhappy and daydreamed what it would be like to be in beauty school so I did some research. I enrolled soon after and schooling took about a year. As soon as I got my CA cosmetology license, I soon started looking for jobs and a friend tagged me in a salon post on Instagram. I submitted my resume, had an interview and landed the job at front desk at Nine Zero One Salon in January 2015. I worked my way up the ladder and my clientele quickly started picking up and a year later, I found myself booking celebrity clients, tv gigs, photoshoots, red carpet events and touring jobs all over the country. The rest is history!

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I am so incredibly blessed to have landed my first job at 901 Salon. The owners really took care of me and surrounded me with a team that taught me well and how to have proper salon etiquette. Of course, there have been some bad days but who doesn’t have those? Needless to say, my road to get to where I’m at today has been nothing but smooth. I’m so lucky!

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I love to say that I actually love to do what I do, I’m a hairstylist and makeup artist. I specialize in weddings and beauty, photoshoots and red carpet. Although hair cutting and coloring come with the territory of being a hairstylist, I do not enjoy that part of it (haha!). I LOVE braiding and styling when it comes to hair. When it’s time for makeup, I drool over brows and getting perfect skin every time. I’d say I’m most proud of building a name for myself and getting to work with celebrities. Never in a million years did I think this would be my life but here I am! My parents always taught me about humility and remembering where I came from. If I didn’t listen to them and always have that in the back of my mind, my character or integrity wouldn’t be what it is. I’m thankful!

Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
Always, always keep a good head on your shoulders. Be NICE to people, it gets you places! And say yes to free jobs even when you want to say no. Opportunities will come when you say yes!
